This week’s main feature delves into the life of Cassandra Austen, not the renowned Jane, but her elder sister. Any TV or movie adaptation of one of Jane Austen’s six novels will undoubtedly draw a massive crowd. However, this BBC series deviates from traditional adaptations as it is based on a book by Gill Hornby, making it far more captivating.

For quite some time, Cassandra has been criticized for destroying many letters exchanged by the sisters. However, Hornby, along with leading actress Keeley Hawes, aim to rehabilitate Cassandra’s reputation. Hornby explains that this narrative is essentially a tale of love between two sisters.

From the scant letters that remain, it’s clear that Jane held a deep affection for her elder sister. Given they were the only girls among six brothers, it’s challenging not to concur with Hornby’s perspective. Any Austen enthusiast would relish the conversation between Hornby and Hawes, as well as the four-part series.
