Lindsey Coulson has revealed why she won’t be making a return to EastEnders as Carol Jackson.
The well-known actress is now part of the Waterloo Road series ensemble, taking on the role of new headteacher Dame Stella Drake. However, due to several actors reprising their roles on EastEnders, viewers have speculated if we might catch a glimpse of her iconic character, Carol Jackson, in Walford again.
It was anticipated that a return from Carol might occur, given the latest appearances of her former partner David Wicks (played by Michael French) and daughter Bianca Jackson (portrayed by Patsy Palmer).
When asked if Carol might attend the 40th anniversary event, Coulson replied: “I don’t believe so. To take on another character and invest time in it would seem strange to me, given my strong affinity for a previous role I played. I think it’s fantastic that the show is reaching this milestone of 40 years because it’s remarkable how the audience has remained loyal throughout.
After receiving acclaim for her portrayal of Billie Jackson’s emotional journey and Carol’s fight against breast cancer in her final arc, Coulson mused that maybe there weren’t many more emotionally distressing roles she wished to take on for Carol.
Coulson stated, “You recognize how characters evolve and return, but occasionally, I believe a conclusion is necessary for certain characters. To be honest, I mentioned this around 10 years ago or so, but it feels like Carol has moved on towards the horizon, and it’s a contented ending.
Considering Carol now, Coulson mused: “She must be engaged in some volunteer work somewhere, detached from all the chaos. She seems to have found peace. Despite cherishing my time portraying her and having fantastic storylines, it feels like her chapter is closing, and I’m thrilled that people admire that character because I believe she was authentic.
As a fan, I was fortunate enough to receive engaging content to work with. However, I’m finding myself drawn to stories that delve into less tragic themes like the death of children, broken marriages, and heartache. It seems there’s a limit to how much of this I wish to create.
She went on to say: “In essence, I yearn for life to shine a bit more, and remarkably, Dame Stella Drake in Waterloo Road embodies this for me. It’s as if she is always well-dressed, prepared, and educated. Granted, Carol could have been the same.
It seems to me that Carol could have earned a degree from an open university and is possibly offering her services at a charity center in Calais. Her actions suggest that she might be making a positive impact on the world through volunteering. I have this strong feeling that she’s engaged in noble deeds somewhere out there.
I sometimes find that the characters don’t seem to grow or develop as much as I’d like. If I were to revisit this story, perhaps I’d find the character serving tea in a cafe. It seems to me that she could have more experiences and live a fuller life beyond that.
Coulson remarked: “I had a wonderful time there, learned a lot, made terrific friends, and I believe it’s truly remarkable that they’re celebrating 40 years – that’s their real accomplishment. However, Carol won’t be returning – she mentioned so herself.
Sorry, David and Carol fans, looks like those lovebirds won’t be reuniting any time soon!
Currently, it’s announced that Sonia Fowler, Carol’s youngest daughter, portrayed by Natalie Cassidy, will be leaving the soap opera this month, marking more than 30 years since her initial appearance.
