Nintendo Switch Online Adds New SNES Freebies

Subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online enjoy various benefits monthly, such as free game trials and unique profile icons. This week, profile icons inspired by “Super Mario Kart” have been introduced, featuring designs for characters like Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, and Lakitu. In total, there are 7 distinct designs available, each costing a mere 10 Platinum points. However, do take note that these profile icons can only be obtained after playing the game they’re based on initially. Essentially, you need to run “Super Mario Kart” through the Super Nintendo app before being able to claim them.

Nintendo doesn’t enforce the rule strictly; you don’t need to play Super Mario Kart to get the icons. Simply opening the app and launching the game is sufficient for eligibility! You’ll even earn 50 Platinum points immediately, which is almost enough to collect all 7 icons, so this is a great opportunity not to be missed. The icons will be accessible until March 3rd, giving subscribers around a month to claim them.

The classic game Super Mario Kart, which kick-started the popular Nintendo series, debuted way back in 1992. Although it might appear somewhat old-fashioned next to the latest offering, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, players can appreciate how it paved the way for future installments. Interestingly, these character icons have been released just a couple of weeks following the unveiling of the Super Mario Kart soundtrack on Nintendo Music. It’s not entirely clear why Nintendo is focusing so much on the origins of the series right now, but it could be because there’s a brand new Mario Kart game in development for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2!

Regarding the potential Nintendo Switch 2, one can’t help but wonder if they’ll keep features like custom profile pictures. There’s a lot we don’t know about this upcoming system from Nintendo, but it’s clear that elements such as the Nintendo Account system will be continued to ensure a seamless experience for users. Considering how profile icons have become a common feature over the past few years, it seems likely they’ll transfer to the Switch 2, although nothing is definitively known yet.

It’s likely we’ll gather more information about these subjects within the upcoming months. As of now, there’s no official announcement regarding the release date for the Nintendo Switch 2, but indications point towards it coming out in the first half of 2025. In April, Nintendo is planning hands-on events for the new console, followed by a Nintendo Direct in the same month. It appears that the console might be launched soon after these events, potentially in May or June.
