Approximately two and a half decades since the original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series concluded its seven-season span, Disney is progressing with a fresh installment in the saga. Hulu is reportedly close to commissioning a pilot for this reboot, with Sarah Michelle Gellar likely to return as Buffy Summers. The upcoming pilot will be helmed by “The Eternals” director Chloé Zhao, and its script has been penned by the sibling duo Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, known for their work on “Poker Face”.
The upcoming TV series is being created by 20th Television, now under the Disney Corporation, together with Searchlight TV. Interestingly, Joss Whedon, the original creator of “Buffy”, is not involved in this project. This fact raises concerns about whether the reboot can recreate the enchantment of the original or if it might follow in the footsteps of some recent Disney disappointments – where female-centric tales are oversimplified into stereotypical “girlboss” portrayals instead of offering rich, multidimensional narratives.
Joss Whedon’s impact on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is immense; he developed the character, penned and directed several outstanding episodes, and even expanded the storyline through comic books after its television run. However, in recent times, his reputation has been tarnished by a series of misconduct allegations.
2020 saw “Justice League” actor Ray Fisher level accusations of abusive and unacceptable conduct against director Joss Whedon on the film set, leading to increased examination of his behavior.
In 2021, Charisma Carpenter, who played Buffy in the series, spoke out about Joss Whedon’s alleged mistreatment and bullying towards her. She claimed that while she was pregnant, he repeatedly called her “fat” and later wrote her character off the show following her childbirth. Other cast members, including Michelle Trachtenberg and Amber Benson, backed up Carpenter’s allegations. Notably, Trachtenberg disclosed that there was a rule on set to prevent Whedon from being alone with her as a teenager due to these inappropriate behaviors.
In the aftermath, Gal Gadot publicly claimed that during the reshooting process for Justice League, Joss Whedon had reportedly threatened to harm her career.
In her account, Whedon’s former spouse once characterized him as a “self-proclaimed feminist who practices hypocrisy,” referring to the multiple extramarital relationships he was said to have had.
After these disclosures, Whedon essentially vanished from the film industry. Currently, Disney’s Buffy remake is moving forward in his absence, though it’s yet unclear if this will be creatively detrimental or beneficial.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must admit I’m feeling a bit apprehensive about the upcoming Buffy reboot from Disney, even with Sarah Gellar on board. The concern stems from recent Disney projects like The Acolyte, The Marvels, and Echo that have faced criticism for putting ideological messaging ahead of robust character development and gripping storylines. Instead of creating complex female leads, these shows often resort to one-dimensional “strong female character” stereotypes that lack depth, struggle, or growth. I truly hope the Buffy reboot breaks this pattern and delivers a heroine as compelling and iconic as the original.
In my perspective, the original “Buffy” series truly shone because it masterfully blended action, horror, humor, and character development. I found Buffy Summers to be a compelling protagonist, yet she was far from perfect – she faced genuine trials, made errors, and evolved as a character over time. If the reboot lacks Joss Whedon’s talent for witty dialogue, intricate storytelling, and character progression, there’s a danger it might slip into the same predictable realms that have characterized many contemporary Disney properties led by women.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that Whedon should take part. Instead, the issue at hand is whether or not a revival of Buffy is appropriate in the first place.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that my anticipation is tempered by the director’s selection – Chloé Zhao. Although she earned an Oscar for her masterpiece, “Nomadland,” her most significant venture into franchise filmmaking was “Eternals,” which unfortunately marked one of Marvel’s biggest box office flops.
The movie received widespread criticism due to its lackluster story development, slow tempo, and flat characters who were often stereotypical Disney female power figures – strong yet emotionally vacant, and hard to connect with. Since Buffy was renowned for its compelling narrative, character-focused conflicts, and a blend of humor and darkness that made it unique, Zhao’s participation leaves questions about whether this remake will become another dull Disney production that fails to acknowledge the original’s distinctive qualities.
What We Know About the New Buffy:
- Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Return: Gellar, who previously dismissed the idea of revisiting Buffy, recently changed her stance. Negotiations for her involvement are in the final stages, and she will also serve as an executive producer.
- Chloé Zhao Directing: The Oscar-winning director’s involvement adds prestige to the project, but her track record in genre storytelling is mixed
- A Writers’ Room is Already Forming: With the Zuckerman sisters writing the pilot, Hulu seems confident the show will move to series. Whether other original cast members will return remains unclear, but it is considered likely.
- Dolly Parton Producing: The legendary singer’s company, Sandollar, was a producer on the original Buffy and is involved in the reboot.
The main challenge in reviving this series is winning over long-term fans who believe it’s impossible to recreate the authentic spirit of Buffy, especially without the creator who played a crucial role in its success. Although Whedon’s personal issues are indisputable, his impact on the show’s triumph cannot be underestimated. This has led many to argue that due to his controversial standing in Hollywood, it might be wiser not to revisit this intellectual property at all.
If Disney tackles this project with reverence towards the original content, focusing more on deep character growth and engaging narratives rather than superficial messaging, it has the chance to thrive. However, if it adopts the approach of Disney’s recent disappointments, this Buffy could become just another lifeless corporate creation, swapping nostalgia for another hollow “empowered” lead character.
