After long years of anticipation, Marvel has officially released the first trailer for “Fantastic Four: Initial Ventures,” signifying the highly anticipated MCU introduction of Marvel’s original family, the Fantastic Four. However, with the studio currently in a critical situation, this film could be their final opportunity to reverse their fortune.

Directed by Matt Shakman, who also helmed WandaVision, the upcoming film Fantastic Four: First Steps features Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (The Thing). This movie chronicles their journey from being test pilots to becoming superheroes after encountering cosmic radiation. Yet, the most formidable obstacle they face is Galactus, the renowned world-devourer, portrayed by Ralph Ineson.
The freshly unveiled Fantastic Four preview highlights the primary four characters, a completely computer-generated The Thing, and also HERBIE the Robot, a throwback to dedicated followers. A quick peek at Galactus hints at the vastness of the tale, yet something conspicuously absent—there’s no trace of the female Silver Surfer. Julia Garner will portray Shalla-Bal rather than Norrin Radd, a decision that has already stirred criticism. Some speculate Marvel may have intentionally excluded her from the trailer to dodge immediate fan uproar, given their history of contentious projects. It wouldn’t be shocking if they did so.
As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’ve got to say, the post-Endgame era has been quite a rollercoaster. Newcomers like Captain Marvel, Miss Marvel, Moon Knight, the Eternals, and Echo haven’t quite struck a chord with us old-timers. The studio’s approach of passing the torch to diverse heroes such as Kate Bishop (Hawkeye), Riri Williams (Ironheart), Shuri (Black Panther), and Sam Wilson (Captain America)—the so-called “mantle strategy”—hasn’t been as successful as they’d hoped. The underwhelming performances of films like The Marvels and The Eternals at the box office have added to the challenges.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the revival of Marvel’s iconic teams, The Fantastic Four and X-Men. However, if “Fantastic Four: First Steps” veers towards the pitfalls of tokenistic messaging and enforced diversity, it could potentially be detrimental for the studio. Fan skepticism is already palpable, and the conspicuous absence of the female Silver Surfer in the trailer indicates that Marvel is well aware that this film is under a microscope.
Will the trailer for the Fantastic Four live up to its big promises? This film could be a pivotal point – either restoring faith in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or confirming it needs saving. Moviegoers will discover the truth when Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres in cinemas this year.
