Microsoft Teams now offers an updated calendar experience, aligning it more closely with Outlook. Essentially, the calendar within Teams is receiving an overhaul based on Outlook’s calendar functionality. This upgrade includes a fresh design and new capabilities. Some of these new features, such as delegate access, print support, extended calendar settings, and support for multiple time zones, were previously available in Outlook but are now being introduced to Teams.
In a recent blog post, Microsoft has made the newly integrated calendar interface available for use. This updated calendar is optional, meaning that organizations won’t experience any changes unless admin users explicitly decide to activate the integrated calendar. Additionally, there’s an option to revert back to the traditional calendar whenever desired.
The combined calendar function offers compatibility with Copilot and Locations, enabling you to access scheduling options such as managed reservations directly from the Teams calendar. Additionally, features like workspace status and Location cards can now be found within Teams after the calendar upgrade.
The following views are available in the unified Calendar, as outlined by Microsoft.
- Month View: View your calendar by month, a highly requested feature, especially useful for users with sparse calendars.
- Split View: When more than one calendar is selected, you can now split the calendar into two independent views.
- Time Scale: Specify time scales or intervals for the calendar surface
- Saved Views: Save your current view for easy access later
- Weather Display: See the weather for your current location directly in the calendar
In the revamped shared schedule, I get to tailor details like event timings and my specific location. Post the recent upgrade, it’s a breeze to print out my calendar or share it with colleagues within our organization.
Here’s how to enable the new calendar in Teams:
- Open Microsoft Temas (desktop).
- Navigate to the Calendar app within Teams.
- Click the toggle for “New Calendar” that appears in the upper-right corner of the Teams Calendar app.
Microsoft advises that the freshly updated calendar typically loads swiftly, often in just a matter of seconds. Therefore, you might not notice the change occurring immediately after activating the feature.
As an observer, I’ve found it intriguing all along that Microsoft’s Teams platform offered a distinct calendar experience given its reputation for top-tier calendar apps. Having been around for quite some time now, you’d expect a seamless integration between the two, but that hasn’t always been the case. However, considering the multiple overhauls Teams has undergone since its inception, it’s not entirely unexpected to witness a revamped calendar within this dynamic environment. The unified Teams app was launched last August, and in October, Microsoft announced what seems to be the most significant change in Teams’ history so far.
