Call of Duty Bundle Raises $1.6M for LA Fire Relief

In a span of merely two weeks, an exclusive operator package in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone generated $1.6 million from players to aid in Los Angeles wildfire relief efforts. The game’s publisher, Activision (owned by Microsoft), also added another $1 million to the donation. The collected funds will be divided equally between the LAFD Foundation and Direct Relief. This LA Fire Relief operator pack was accessible through the in-game Call of Duty store for 2400 COD points.

Treyarch Studios, developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and based at Activision headquarters, are situated in Santa Monica. This region faced potential danger from the Palisades Fire, leading to evacuations and enforced curfews. Fortunately, Santa Monica remained fire-free. However, some Activision employees unfortunately found themselves in the path of the flames. In a LinkedIn message, Activision pledged ongoing assistance to their team members affected by the fires.

On January 7, the LA Wildfires ignited initially from a brush fire in Pacific Palisades. Driven by hurricane-strength winds and prolonged drought, the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, and over 30 other wildfires swept through 40,000 acres across Los Angeles County. Over 16,000 structures were estimated to have been demolished by these fires, among them more than a thousand century-old homes steeped in historical significance. The blazes were finally brought under control after burning for 24 days. Regrettably, at least 29 lives have been lost due to the LA Wildfires.

2.6 million dollars in donations, collectively from Activision and the Call of Duty community, will be distributed to two distinct organizations: The LAFD Foundation and Direct Relief. Direct Relief is a charitable organization that offers humanitarian aid, emergency funds, and resilient power solutions during times of crisis, particularly following the Los Angeles wildfires. This charity equips disaster responders and medical professionals with backup power systems and specialized wildfire response kits, N95 masks, medications, and first-aid supplies.

Through their efforts, Direct Relief has provided access to approximately 2.3 million N95 respirators for individuals impacted within Los Angeles County. Additionally, the charitable organization established temporary shelters for evacuees and community healthcare facilities.

The LAFD Foundation, although independent from the Los Angeles Fire Department, serves as a charitable organization under section 501(c)(3), offering equipment and financial aid for the LAFD in Los Angeles. This charity equips firefighters with necessary gear and replaces outdated items, also focusing on providing cancer-prevention equipment to purge toxic substances from firefighting attire. Additionally, the LAFD Foundation aids firefighters by supporting behavioral health initiatives, canine therapy, and youth programs. As stated by the LAFD Foundation, only about 3% of Los Angeles’ city budget is dedicated to expenses ranging from fire engines to flashlights.

On LinkedIn, Activision expressed, “We understand that getting back to some normality in Los Angeles will take time. A big thank you goes out to our brave first responders, and a heartfelt appreciation to our staff who have shown great support for one another during this challenging period.
