During its February 2025 highlight event, Capcom unveiled additional details and insights from developers about Onimusha: Way of the Sword. They also announced that the game is expected to launch in 2026.
The game, titled “Way of the Sword,” introduces a fresh main character and offers more intriguing and nerve-wracking adversaries within the enchanting and historical metropolis of Kyoto as its backdrop.
In 2001, the Onimusha series was launched, merging dark fantasy with actual historical events to narrate a tale of a Japanese warrior who gains the power of the Oni to save the world from the malevolent Genma. This franchise has been a global sensation, surpassing sales of 8 million units as reported by Capcom. The latest installment, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, continues this tradition and delves into Japan’s history, where it is threatened by the corruption spreading from the underworld’s Genma.
In our comprehensive analysis of Onimusha: Way of the Sword gameplay, the creators explained that action enthusiasts can anticipate engaging in thrilling sword-vs-sword combat and defeating grotesque Genma by absorbing their souls. The story revolves around a fresh protagonist equipped with an Oni Gauntlet. To recover and activate unique abilities, players must capture the souls of corrupted Genma within Kyoto during the Edo era using the Oni Gauntlet. Mastering the technique of soul absorption during fights is crucial for player victory.
As a passionate fan, I was thrilled to see Capcom’s gameplay trailer for Onimusha. However, it was recorded with the gruesome details like dismemberment and gore dialed down. Yet, the director himself, Satoru Nihei, assured us that when we play the full game, those elements will be there in all their brutal glory.
Apart from discussing the dark fantasy backdrop of the upcoming game, Satoru further elaborated on the combat mechanics, emphasizing that while the team doesn’t intend to create an unrealistically challenging game, they aim to develop a title where action enthusiasts can relish in exhilarating sword fights and find gratification from vanquishing their adversaries.
Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny remaster
Besides revealing fresh information and previews for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Capcom announced that Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is set to launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam later in the year. This marks the second game from the series to appear on contemporary gaming platforms, following the trend set by the remastered version of Onimusha: Warlords.
Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny was originally released in 2002.
