Kay Burley announces retirement from Sky News after 36 years

In wrapping up, she expressed that it had been both an honor and a privilege to collaborate with some of the top-tier and dedicated professionals, guiding a fledgling news brand to global recognition and esteem.

The news, inherently, can be heartbreaking, and we’ve jointly reported on numerous incidents that have significantly impacted lives – ranging from the sorrowful passing of Diana to the horrifying events like 9/11 terror attacks, the Asian Tsunami, and the Concorde air disaster.

Of course, we’ve had our fair share of delightful peaks as well, haven’t we? Moments like London securing the 2012 Olympic Games bid, multiple royal weddings, jubilee celebrations, and let’s not forget the days filled with anticipation for newborn royals at the Lindo Wing.

However, following approximately 18 years of continuous live television news broadcasting, which is more than any other individual globally, I am now eager to explore my other interests, particularly my fondness for traveling.

After having reported on twelve distinct general elections, such as the recent win by Sir Keir Starmer, I have decided to retire from Sky News. Politicians of all parties can surely celebrate this news!

At the tender age of 17, Burley embarked on her journalism journey, and prior to joining Sky News, she gained experience working with numerous broadcasting platforms such as BBC local radio, Tyne Tees Television, and TV-am.

In a communication to his Sky News coworkers, David Rhodes, Sky News Executive Chairman mentioned: “Discussing with Kay about her strategies, we all thought it was more appropriate for Kay to reveal this news herself. For countless hours of live news broadcasting, Kay has left an unrivaled mark on television journalism and Sky’s history. Her dedication to preserving Sky’s legacy remains unparalleled. I am confident that certain MPs in Westminster can now rest peacefully, no longer subjected to her relentless questioning during morning sessions.

I’m stepping down from my role at Sky News today, marking the end of my broadcasts here. Rest assured, Breakfast is still on, graced by our current hosts and the team that takes over on Fridays through Sundays. I want to express my deepest gratitude for the opportunity to serve Sky, for the lessons in mastering the interview, and for being a part of British journalism.
