Gundam Live-Action Movie Starts Production, First Poster Revealed!

At last, the day has come that many mech anime enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for – Mobile Suit: Gundam has officially started production on its upcoming live-action adaptation! First announced in 2018, there were doubts among fans whether this Gundam film by Bandai Namco and Legendary Pictures would ever come to fruition. Now, we can share some encouraging news with fans as not only have the two companies initiated the engine for their movie project, they’ve also revealed the first poster! Given the success of Netflix’s One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender in live-action adaptations, this could very well be the next major milestone.

Initially, it was planned that Jordan Vogt-Roberts (known for movies like “Kong: Skull Island” and “The Kings of Summer”) would direct the live-action adaptation of the anime. However, a change in direction occurred last year, with Jim Mickle (“Sweet Tooth”) stepping up to take over as director. Brian K. Vaughn is said to still be on board for writing the script. As of now, there’s no release date announced for the film titled “Gundam,” but this recent development brings hope to fans who have been eagerly waiting for this modernized take on the popular mech franchise.

Gundam Lives

I’m thrilled to share that a press release from Bandai Namco unveiled some exciting news: They’re joining forces with Legendary on a groundbreaking live-action Gundam movie, marking the first time this iconic series makes its way onto the big screen! On top of this dynamic partnership, Bandai Namco plans to establish Bandai Namco Filmworks America, LLC, a new North American subsidiary, to help bring the Gundam film to life. Although details are scarce for now, the emergence of this new division could pave the way for more collaborations between Bandai and Hollywood, potentially opening up new opportunities for other beloved properties under their umbrella.

The storyline of the forthcoming Gundam film remains undisclosed, but it was initially marketed as a replica of the original anime that sparked the franchise. When the Mobile Suit: Gundam series debuted in the 1970s, it depicted the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon engaged in a space war. The pilots Amuro and Char were central figures on both sides, frequently clashing and aiming to help their respective factions triumph in the seemingly unending conflict. It will be intriguing to observe how the live-action Gundam adaptation alters things from the original content. You can find the first poster for the upcoming film below.

The Future of Gundam Anime

Even though the live-action movie is yet to come, the Gundam anime franchise continues to thrive with upcoming projects at hand. The latest addition, Gundam GQuuuuuux, has been dominating Japanese theaters for two consecutive weekends, and its North American release is scheduled for later this month. This film could potentially be the first three episodes of a new series due out this spring, but it’s already making waves on the big screen. Interestingly enough, the series spearheaded by Hideaki Anno seems to have ties to the original series that some might find unexpected.
