Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are mourning a difficult loss.
The couple shared the heartbreaking news that their family dog, Chewie, died Feb. 4. She was 17.
Yesterday was tough for us, as we had to part ways with our beloved Shih Tzu, Chewie. Mark shared this heartbreaking news on the February 5th episode of Live with Kelly and Mark. Over the past few weeks, Chewie stopped eating completely and her intake decreased significantly. She was severely dehydrated and experiencing some neurological issues as well.
As a devoted follower, I’d express it this way: “I shared that, given the circumstances, we chose the compassionate route of having a veterinarian visit our NYC apartment for an at-home, humane euthanasia procedure, to help ease the passing of our beloved pet, Chewie.
Mark added, “I understand that I’m making the right decision, but it won’t be easy… This might just be one of the hardest things we’ve faced as a married couple.” Pet owners at home can likely empathize with this sentiment. After all, losing a beloved pet is like experiencing a form of grief.
The actor from Riverdale, who is also a parent to a 4-year-old dog named Lena and children Michael Consuelos (27), Lola Consuelos (23), and Joaquin Consuelos (21) with Kelly, confirmed that they made the correct decision regarding their cherished pet. They had first become acquainted with this pet during an adoption segment on Live.
“If it wasn’t for this show, we shouldn’t know Chewie,” Mark shared. “She grew up with our kids.”
While he was talking, a touched Kelly discreetly brushed away some tears, preparing herself emotionally for her turn to speak to the audience.
She expressed her regret, saying, “I truly believed I had addressed everything, but apparently not. Please accept my apologies as this outcome wasn’t what I intended.
Over the years, the 54-year-old often pondered about the deep affection they held for their deceased pet dog, a constant friend they referred to as their “loyal partner,” particularly as their children grew up and left the family home.
Kelly expressed heartfelt appreciation for the dog, exclaiming, “We are incredibly thankful for him!” As each of our children went off to college and established their independent lives, Chewie stayed steadfastly by our side.
She went on saying, ‘We’ve been incredibly blessed.’ ‘Our lives have been filled with good fortune,’ she emphasized, ‘without experiencing the kind of profound loss many others have faced.’ ‘We’re still lucky enough to have our parents with us.’ She paused, ‘I know there are greater troubles in the world, and I feel badly for crying in your presence. But please understand, this dog was exceptionally special to us, a truly remarkable pet.’
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I can’t help but share a heartwarming story about my own experience. Just recently, I bid farewell to my beloved pet, Chewie, in a manner reminiscent of a grand presidential send-off. A procession of family, friends, and even familiar faces like our mailman paid their respects, acknowledging the special bond we shared with this wonderful canine companion. In the most emotional moment, I found myself saying my final goodbyes, touched by the outpouring of love and memories that surrounded us in those poignant moments.
She always kept us from kissing her face,” she clarified. “Her face held great importance to her. She wasn’t like other dogs. And after she passed away last night, I kissed her a thousand times on her face. I even kissed her nose; it was something I had never done before.
Kelly chuckled and remarked, “I figured she must have been up in ‘Doggy Nirvana,’ grumbling away. Yet, it didn’t matter to me because it felt so wonderful to experience it.
