Harrison Ford is openly discussing the underperformance of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” at the box office. The fifth and final installment in the Indy series, estimated to have cost over $300 million, generated only $384 million globally, resulting in a loss of approximately $130 million for Disney. However, Ford, aged 82, feels no remorse about resurrecting the archaeologist for one last journey and concluding the Indiana Jones saga after 42 years, as he’s content with its departure into the sunset.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal for the release of Captain America: Brave New World, Ford expressed that unexpected events occur. He felt there was a tale left untold. After Indy experienced the repercussions of his lifestyle, he desired another opportunity to revitalize him, remove some of his vitality, and observe how he fares in new situations. Despite his age, Ford remains content with his decision to make that movie.

In “Dial of Destiny,” directed by James Mangold, we find ourselves years after the events of “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (2008), where Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, had married Marion Ravenwood, portrayed by Karen Allen. However, in the 1969-set “Dial,” their relationship has taken a turn for the worse following the tragic death of their son, Mutt Williams, played by Shia LaBeouf, during the Vietnam War, leading to their separation.

In this production, Ford heads a group that features Phoebe Waller-Bridge (known for her role in ‘Fleabag’) as Indy’s goddaughter, Helena Shaw; Antonio Banderas, from ‘Uncharted’, playing the part of frogman Renaldo; Toby Jones, last seen in ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’, portraying Helena’s father and Indy’s WWII friend, Basil Shaw; Mads Mikkelsen, star of ‘Doctor Strange’, as the antagonist, Dr. Jürgen Voller; and John Rhys-Davies reprises his role as Sallah from ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and ‘Last Crusade’.

In June 2023, “Dial of Destiny” debuted at the top of the box office, earning a whopping $60 million in its first weekend. However, it slipped to second place in its second week, yielding the spot to the fresh release “Insidious: The Red Door,” which garnered $33 million. Over the Fourth of July holiday, it collected an additional $27.4 million but was eventually surpassed by another new release, Tom Cruise’s action movie “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning.” In its third week, “Dial” dropped to fourth place with earnings of $12.2 million. Its fourth week saw stiff competition from the blockbuster sensations “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” collectively known as “Barbenheimer,” causing a 46% decline in its earnings, leaving it with $6.6 million.

During its 77-day run, the latest Indiana Jones movie, released by Lucasfilm, earned $174.4 million in domestic box office sales and an additional $209.4 million internationally, totaling $384 million worldwide. This makes it the second lowest-grossing Indiana Jones film, trailing behind 1984’s Temple of Doom ($333 million). The original Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) earned $389 million when considering re-releases, while the trilogy concluder, Last Crusade (1989), grossed an impressive $472 million. The highest-grossing Indiana Jones film remains Crystal Skull, which was released 20 years later as a franchise revival and generated a massive global box office of $786 million despite mixed fan reviews.

1) The five Indiana Jones films are currently available for streaming on Disney+. In a new turn of events, Harrison Ford’s character will make his appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as U.S. President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk, alongside Anthony Mackie, in Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World, hitting theaters on February 14.
