Whenever conversations about groundbreaking projects in the world of anime arise, the 1995 animated masterpiece “Ghost In The Shell” is often mentioned as a game-changer. This movie not only introduced a unique animation style and narrative, but it also paved the way for numerous stories centered around Major Kusanagi and her associates. With a new anime project set to debut in 2026, the franchise has announced plans for a fresh endeavor that will transport fans back in time again. This upcoming project not only revisits the highly praised original film but also delves into the various series that have contributed significantly to the franchise’s widespread popularity within the anime community.
Ghost in the Shell, an intriguing anime franchise, delves into the complex boundary between humans and technology. Set in a futuristic cyberpunk world, Kusanagi is a cyborg who is a member of the Public Security Section 9 task force, tackling and preventing crime. The original film ignited a series of sequels, TV seasons, and even a live-action movie featuring Scarlett Johansson, although the live-action version has been a topic of much debate among fans ever since. Excitingly, Ghost in the Shell is set to return with a fresh anime installment next year. Production I.G., the original animators, will be back at the helm, but they’ll have some help this time around. Science SARU, the studio behind Dandadan, will also contribute to the new anime adaptation.

The Origin of Ghost In The Shell
In 2023, franchise creator Masamune Shirow shared insights about the origins of his franchise and the creation of Major Kusanagi’s universe. He traced it back to a computer game called “Life Game,” which was launched in late 1970, and served as inspiration for building the narrative framework of this world in the early 80s. This refers to the interconnected Masamune Shirow universe that expanded from BLACK MAGIC and ORION (with many more works still unpublished).
His narrative unfolded further, “In 1985, he released a comic book titled ‘Appleseed’. Leveraging his network of contacts, he commenced international distribution, focusing mainly on English-speaking regions. In this piece, you’ll find fully armored cyborgs, partially mechanical individuals, extensive satellite surveillance systems, advanced public security, people with brain augmentations, two-way real-time communication, digital and analog hacking techniques, among other elements. These innovations were not derived from ‘Ghost in the Shell’.
