Despite the demise of Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff films, there are ongoing plans for Spider-Man TV series spinoffs. One of these upcoming projects is the live-action TV series titled “Spider-Noir,” featuring Nicolas Cage reprising his role as the Spider-Man Noir character from the animated “Spider-Verse” movies. As production continues on this show, the cast has expanded with two new additions: Amy Aquino, recognized for her role as the therapists of Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan in Marvel’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and Andrew Robinson from “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Based on recent announcements, Aquino and Robinson are expected to join the cast of Spider-Noir as its final members for this initial season. Details about their roles are being kept secret, but considering the nature of the spinoff series, it’s reasonable to assume they will portray vintage versions of well-known Spider-Man characters or villains. However, there’s a possibility that these late additions could be for characters who will link Spider-Noir to the wider Spider-Verse universe (either via cameos or post-credits scenes), or they might introduce characters whose roles may grow in significance with Season 2.
Spider-Noir Cast & Story Info
In addition to Spider-Noir, this series features Lamorne Morris from New Girl, Brendan Gleeson known for 28 Days Later and Gangs of New York, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li from Sinners, and Jack Huston recognized for Boardwalk Empire. Notable guest stars include Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, and the more recent addition, Andrew Caldwell.
In this alternate version of Marvel’s New York City during the 1930s, Spider-Man Noir serves as a seasoned private investigator and the city’s sole superhero. Morris portrays a brave journalist named Robbie Robertson, while Gleeson takes on the role of a local crime lord. Li is cast as a nightclub singer, Popoola plays a determined World War I veteran, and Huston assumes the character of a bodyguard. The supporting actors’ roles have not been revealed yet, which might suggest they are either well-known characters reimagined for this show, or it’s just typical of Sony-Marvel to keep things mysterious.
The demise of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has intensified the burden on the “Spider-Noir” series – the last standing project from Sony’s original plan to create an interconnected universe of Spider-Man TV shows. This plan initially involved two series, “Silk: Spider Society” and “Silver & Black”, but the former disintegrated during production, while the latter, featuring Spider-Man’s love interests Black Cat and Silver Sable, has been stuck in development limbo since the 2010s. With Mike Cage on board, “Spider-Noir” stands a chance of attracting viewers – whether it can sustain itself as a viable concept is yet to be determined.
Spider-Noir will stream exclusively on MGM+ before expanding to Amazon Prime Video.
