Actor Ron Perlman, known for playing Hellboy in two films, has shared that he’d be willing to reprise the role under one specific circumstance. In conversation with That Hashtag Show, Perlman was asked about his interest in returning to the series. “If it were Guillermo [del Toro], I would,” Perlman stated, referring to acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro who directed both of Perlman’s portrayals of the character. Furthermore, Perlman shared that he declined an opportunity to work on a Hellboy project with a different director. “I had the chance to play him for others, but I turned it down,” Perlman said.
According to Perlman, it is Del Toro who should be the one to depict the world of Hellboy. In his opinion, it’s essentially Del Toro’s franchise, and he considers himself a loyal associate of this frequent collaborator (Perlman has been in seven of Del Toro’s movies).
According to the Dark Horse Comic franchise, the movie “Hellboy” made its debut in 2004 and garnered favorable feedback, raking in $99.8 million at the global box office (on a budget between $60-66 million). This success paved the way for the production of a follow-up film, “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” which hit the screens in 2008. Similar to its precursor, “The Golden Army” was met with positive criticism, but unfortunately, a third movie in Guillermo del Toro’s series never came into being—despite speculation about it for years.
After Perlman’s tenure as Hellboy ended, the movie series has been restarted not once but twice. The 2019 film featuring David Harbour received harsh criticism from critics and bombed at the box office, earning just $55 million worldwide. Jack Kesy assumed the role in 2024’s “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” but it didn’t do much better. In fact, that movie made a paltry $2 million globally and was directly released to video-on-demand services in the U.S.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel that it makes perfect sense for Perlman to decline the opportunity to work on Hellboy 3 with anyone other than del Toro. Del Toro’s unique cinematic style seamlessly complemented the essence of the material, earning him a devoted fanbase who cherished the vivid visuals, captivating characters, clever humor, and thrilling action scenes in his adaptations. The reboots that followed in 2019 and 2024 clearly demonstrate the void left by del Toro’s absence. It seems that this franchise is challenging to get just right without del Toro at the helm, and it’s easy to understand why Perlman wouldn’t want to contribute to a potential misstep.
Regrettably, the prospects of a Hellboy 3 haven’t improved significantly as of now. Despite Guillermo del Toro and Perlman expressing continued interest, the project has yet to take flight, with del Toro focusing on other ventures such as this year’s Frankenstein. It appears he may have shifted his focus elsewhere. Nevertheless, it would be delightful if Hellboy could one day join the list of film franchises that got a legacy sequel. With numerous Oscars to his credit, del Toro holds more influence today than in the 2000s, potentially making it easier for him to bring the project to life. Although the reboots didn’t fare well financially, del Toro’s series continues to have a dedicated fan base, and there would be great anticipation if he and Perlman were to resurface in the franchise.
