I’ve been witnessing an exciting resurgence in the narrative of RuriDragon, a manga that has been actively published for a year now after a lengthy hiatus spanning multiple years. Its creator has recently shared insights on the lessons fans should glean from this captivating series. This intriguing manga initially graced Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ app in 2022, quickly gaining anticipation as one of the most highly-regarded manga debuts that year. Regrettably, its creator suffered an illness and took a prolonged break for nearly two years. However, with the series back in full swing, fans are now able to delve into the true essence of RuriDragon’s storytelling.
In a recent interview for MangaPlus’s six-year anniversary celebration, creator of “RuriDragon”, Masaoki Shindo, discussed the origins of the story and emphasized that the main message fans should derive from the series is that being unique is captivating. This idea has been central to Shindo’s work on the manga.
Lessons RuriDragon Is Trying to Teach
In the course of numerous years, I’ve grappled with the sensation of being set apart from others, a feeling I once found challenging. However, it was heartening to have those around me recognize and appreciate my peculiarities, viewing them as manifestations of unique talent, individuality, or wit. This affirmation served as the catalyst for my creative aspirations.
I yearned to produce something uniquely mine that would visually express the idea that being distinct is captivating. As I delved deeper into the crafting of this manga, I also shared insights about my artistic process, a methodology that aligns closely with these core principles.
Shindo shared his approach to crafting dialogue: “I aim to write dialogues as though they’re spoken spontaneously, not scripted, to keep them feeling authentic and less fictional.” He added, “To me, the interactions among characters at a specific point in time carry significance, similar to capturing a moment in their lives. Sometimes, the dialogue may veer off in directions I didn’t anticipate!” This suggests that even while writing, Shindo can be taken aback by the direction the conversations between his characters might take.
What Is RuriDragon?
To explore Masaoki Shindo’s “RuriDragon” manga personally, you have two options:
1. Access the most recent chapters for free through Viz Media’s digital Shonen Jump library or Shueisha’s MangaPlus service.
2. If you prefer a physical copy, the first volume of the manga is now available in stores.
As hinted by Shindo, this series takes a more laid-back approach, with Ruri being the most enchanting magical element.
In this manga, Ruri gradually realizes she’s turning into a dragon, all while managing her regular school life. This series has been a fan favorite since its release, and Viz Media describes it as follows: “Well, Ruri is half-dragon. Her mom reveals that Ruri inherited her draconic traits from her father, who indeed is a dragon. Navigating curious classmates was already tough, but Ruri’s dragon genes make things even hotter, literally, during a lecture. So much for an ordinary life!
