2022 marks the golden anniversary of the impactful “Space Battleship Yamato” series, with Japan planning a grand celebration to honor this significant milestone. The Anime Tokusatsu Archive Corporation (ATAC), helmed by Hideaki Anno, creator of “Neon Genesis Evangelion“, will oversee the “Space Battleship Yamato: Complete Record Exhibition” at the Seibu Shibuya department store in Tokyo. The exhibition runs for 17 days, commencing on March 15th and ending on the 31st of the same month. At this event, fans can expect to see new and scarcely available production materials, featuring unseen sketches and character designs from the original anime adaptation in the 1970s.
At this event, you’ll get to explore a comprehensive timeline of the “Space Battleship Yamato,” from its initial 1974 manga to the latest anime film series. A large-scale replica of the ship from the series will be on display for visitors to marvel at. The venue will also offer unique merchandise for fans to purchase, along with a café collaboration with 365cafe located on the fourth floor, where you can sample menu items inspired by “Yamato.” This exhibition, titled “The Complete Record,” follows the special anniversary screenings produced by Anno at the end of 2024.
Hideaki Anno Leaves a Special Message for Space Battleship Yamato Fans
The creator of Evangelion holds a wealth of admiration for the groundbreaking sci-fi anime series and its impact on his life. Anno expressed this sentiment in a touching message upon announcing the Complete Record Exhibition on Space Battleship Yamato.
The roots of Japanese anime can be traced back half a century to Space Battleship Yamato, which first aired on October 6, 1974. If not for the groundbreaking impact of this series, I wouldn’t be in my current position. As a token of gratitude, respect, and as a way of repaying the significant influence that Yamato had on my life, I wish to pass on as many materials related to Space Battleship Yamato as possible to future generations. My hope is that this collection will serve as a comprehensive exhibition, allowing more people to appreciate, recognize, remember, and be inspired by it. We plan to start this project in Shibuya, Tokyo in March. I am grateful for your support.
The impact of the Space Battleship Yamato on Hideaki Anno’s works is widely recognized. The original series exerted a significant influence over Evangelion, second only to the works of Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam. Furthermore, the original anime played a crucial role in shaping Mobile Suit Gundam and Super Dimension Fortress Macross, influencing many plot points and themes that were directly derived from the storyline of Yamato.
Hideaki Anno’s Other Projects Are Making Waves in Japan & Abroad
Apart from focusing on the Complete Record Exhibition, Studio Khara led by Anno is also developing the next major Gundam series titled “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX“. A film collection for this series has already been successful in Japan, topping the box office. Previously, Anno and his crew have been instrumental in creating some of Japan’s most renowned icons, including directing and producing the movies “Shin Godzilla“, “Shin Kamen Rider“, and “Shin Ultraman“. However, no Shin-style film has been announced for “Space Battleship Yamato“; instead, new films under the title “Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199” have been released. The latest installment debuted in November 2024.
According to the announcements made by Crunchyroll, Natalie Comic, and the official 50th-anniversary project website for Space Battleship Yamato, they have confirmed some details.
