In the neighborhood of Palermo, Buenos Aires, the hotel where he was staying on the third floor, the singer tragically fell from the balcony as stated by the Oct. 17 release from Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 translated from Spanish to English. An autopsy revealed that Payne died due to multiple injuries and internal and external bleeding caused by the fall. Although the investigation is ongoing as a ‘doubtful death’ (meaning no clear cause of death has been determined), it seems he was alone at the time of the incident and had reportedly been experiencing some kind of emotional disturbance due to substance abuse. Previously, Payne publicly discussed his struggles with sobriety, mentioning in a July 2023 YouTube video that he’d spent around 100 days in treatment and hadn’t consumed alcohol for about six months.

As per the statement, the coroners identified 25 injuries on Payne’s autopsy that suggested a fall from a height. The release further explained that these head injuries were fatal, while other internal and external hemorrhages in the skull, chest, abdomen, and limbs contributed to his death.

Additionally, the statement mentioned that no defensive injuries were found on the former One Direction member, and there were no signs of third-party involvement in his injuries. However, questions remained regarding Payne’s state at the time of the fall. The release added that due to the position of the body and the fall injuries, it was presumed that Payne did not attempt to protect himself and may have fallen into a semi-conscious or unconscious state.

As medical examiners sought further clarification, the statement noted that they requested histopathological, biochemical, and toxicological studies. When the SAME team and officers from the 14B Neighborhood Police Station arrived at the scene, Payne had already fallen from his balcony and died instantly due to the gravity of his injuries.

Upon searching the room, police found substances suspected to be narcotics and alcoholic drinks, although they were waiting for expert confirmation at that time. Additionally, there were several broken objects and furniture in the room.

Authorities also investigated who had been in the room before Payne’s fall, collecting five statements from three hotel staff members and two women who were with the musician in his room before leaving the hotel when the incident occurred.

The prosecution stated that not only are they attempting to determine the circumstances surrounding the musician’s death, but also investigating the potential role of others in events leading up to Payne’s demise.

In an emergency call made to authorities, a hotel staff member requested help due to a guest who was heavily under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The caller stated, “This individual becomes destructive when he is awake. He’s wrecking the whole room. We really need you to send someone, please.” The staff member also expressed worry about the guest’s safety, saying, “We urgently need assistance because I’m not sure if he poses a risk. This guest is in a room with a balcony, and we are concerned that he might do something dangerous.” The staff member did not mention Payne during the call, and Payne’s representative has not responded to NBC News’ request for comment.

Nevertheless, the statement from November 7 emphasized that the ongoing probe requires more time. This is because the process of unlocking the victim’s damaged netbook and other confiscated devices involved in the investigation is yet to be completed.

Payne was vacationing in Argentina with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. Before his passing, they had been documenting their trip. Snapchat posts from the singer suggested that they were enjoying quality time together, discussing his horse-riding plans, and having a wonderful day in Argentina, as evidenced by screenshots obtained by NBC News. Following Liam Payne’s demise, his bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan publicly expressed their sorrow.
