Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy is reflecting on a terrible moment in her life.
In her initial conversation since his demise, Kate, who began dating the former member of One Direction in 2022, disclosed that she found out about his heartbreaking death in October upon receiving a call from a friend.
Kate expressed to The Sun in an interview on February 5th that she’s grateful for not learning about something through social media because it was hard to imagine. She was at home with their dog, casually browsing TikTok when one of Liam’s friends phoned her.
After discovering that he had fallen fatally from a balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, the 25-year-old, who had recently holidayed with the singer, found it hard to believe.
In that instant, it felt as if a veil had descended over my mind, leaving me utterly bewildered and uncertain. Initially, I dismissed the notion as mere speculation or fabrication meant for sensationalism.
But as the reality of the situation set in, the influencer’s demeanor changed.
Straight away, a sense of unease washed over me,” she went on. “Once I verified the truth, I felt frozen. I attempted to contact him, reaching out to almost everyone.
Despite leaving Argentina ahead of time to be with their dog Nala, Kate found it difficult to find tranquility within her familiar surroundings, instead battling with the aftermath of her loss.
She recollected that she had walked restlessly throughout the house, causing dear Nala to believe she wanted to play, as she continually jumped towards her. However, on that particular night, she wasn’t able to find any sleep.
Besides conducting the interview, Kate also conveyed a note to Liam’s followers, detailing her reasons for discussing her sorrow publicly.
Following countless messages from Liam’s fans asking for understanding during this challenging period, I felt compelled to offer some insight about our relationship, which is very dear to me,” she posted on Instagram Stories. “I truly appreciate your compassion and encouragement. It holds a value that I can’t express in words.
While we delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Liam’s sudden demise, let’s explore further details about the case as we proceed.
On October 16, 2024, it was tragically confirmed by the Emergency Medical Attention System (SAME) to Telemundo that Liam Payne, aged 31, had passed away in Argentina.
The singer met a tragic end by falling fatally from the balcony of a third-story hotel room in Palermo, Buenos Aires, where he was temporarily residing, as reported by the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 on October 17 (translated from Spanish to English). An autopsy revealed that Payne succumbed to “multiple injuries” and “internal and external bleeding” due to the fall.
Although the investigation is treating the incident as a ‘doubtful death’ (meaning there’s no definitive information on the cause), it was suggested that the musician might have been alone at the time of the accident, possibly struggling with an emotional outburst stemming from substance abuse.
In recent interviews, Payne had discussed his struggle with sobriety, mentioning in a July 2023 YouTube video that he’d completed approximately 100 days of treatment and had abstained from alcohol for roughly six months prior to the incident.
The autopsy report indicated that Payne suffered 25 injuries consistent with those caused by a fall from a significant height. These injuries were severe enough to cause his death, with additional internal and external bleeding found in the skull, chest, abdomen, and limbs contributing to his demise.
Forensic experts examining the former One Direction member found no signs of defensive wounds or any injuries suggesting involvement of a third party. However, questions remain about Payne’s condition at the time of the fall.
The prosecution suggested that given the position of the body and the nature of the falls injuries, it is presumed that Payne did not attempt to protect himself and may have fallen into a state of semi- or total unconsciousness.
Medical examiners are seeking more information through histopathological, biochemical, and toxicological studies. At this stage, they require analysis of the stomach contents, alcohol levels in the blood, vitreous humor, bile, nasal swab, and urine to determine alcohol and toxins present.
A preliminary toxicology report has shown that Payne had drugs in his system at the time of his death, according to an informed source who spoke with The New York Times.
The toxicology report indicated the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescribed antidepressant within his system, as stated in a press release dated November 7th by Argentina’s prosecuting authority.
The authorities do not think he committed suicide as per a Nov. 7 press release from Argentina’s public prosecutor, indicating that he may not have been fully aware when he fell. This implies that any action taken by the victim would have been involuntary because, in his state, he was unaware of what he was doing or could not comprehend it. Similarly, Judge Laura Bruniard from the National Criminal and Correctional Court No. 34 suggested in a Dec. 30 press release that given Payne’s condition, he might have tried to exit his room via the balcony and accidentally fallen.
According to the October 17 statement by prosecutors, it seems that Payne fell from the balcony of his third-floor room at CasaSur Palermo hotel around 5:07 p.m. local time. Prior to this incident, the hotel contacted emergency services to request assistance for a guest who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and had damaged some items in the room.
Upon arrival, SAME officials and the 14B Neighborhood Police Station of the City Police found that Payne had already fallen from his balcony and passed away at the scene due to the gravity of his injuries.
Upon searching the room, police discovered what appeared to be narcotics and alcoholic drinks; however, confirmation was still pending from experts at the time. The room also showed signs of destruction and damaged furniture.
Authorities investigated who had been in the room before Payne’s fall, collecting five testimonial statements from three hotel staff members and two women who were with the musician in his room before leaving prior to the incident.
The prosecution stated that their investigation not only aimed to determine the circumstances surrounding the musician’s death but also to explore any potential third-party involvement in the events leading up to Payne’s demise.
In an emergency call made to authorities, a hotel worker requested help due to a guest who was heavily under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The caller stated, “He’s out of control when he’s awake, destroying the entire room. We really need someone to come here as soon as possible.”
The employee also expressed worries about the guest’s safety. They said, “We need immediate assistance because I’m not sure if he’s in danger. The guest is staying in a room with a balcony, and we’re concerned that he might do something dangerous.”
It should be noted that the guest was not identified as Payne during the call. NBC News attempted to get a comment from Payne’s representative but did not receive a response.
Argentina’s chief prosecutor declared on November 7 that three individuals were indicted following the discovery of illicit activities, as stated in a press release translated from Spanish.
The first suspect is an individual who was with the artist daily while he was in Buenos Aires and is accused of abandonment of a person resulting in death.
The second defendant is a hotel employee who needs to respond for providing cocaine to Liam Payne on two separate occasions during his stay at the hotel, and the third suspect, another drug supplier, faces charges for providing cocaine on two distinct instances on October 14.
Initially, it appeared that no one was held responsible in the case. However, further investigation led to the charging of five individuals: Gilda Martin (GAM), Esteban Grassi (ERG), Roger Nores (RLN), Ezequiel Pereyra (EDP), and Braian Paiz (BNP). While RLN was initially charged with abandonment, a judge later opted for a different criminal classification. The press release from Argentina’s prosecutor’s office on Dec. 30 identified Gilda Martin, Esteban Grassi, Roger Nores, Ezequiel Pereyra, and Braian Paiz by name. Notably, Nores stated to the Daily Mail that he did not abandon Payne and was not his manager.
According to a statement released by the prosecutor’s office on November 7th, extensive and thorough investigative steps were taken to understand the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death. This involved collecting statements from over forty hotel staff, family members, friends, medical experts, chemists, and psychiatrists.
The investigation also included a comprehensive review of more than 800 hours of video footage from security cameras within the hotel and on public roads. Furthermore, the forensic analysis of Payne’s cell phone was carried out to examine his calls, messages, conversations on messaging apps, and social media interactions.
Data from other cell phones, such as those of the hotel reception and witnesses, were also obtained and scrutinized to support their statements. Additionally, information regarding the guests and orders at the hotel bar/restaurant was reviewed to identify who visited Payne and what they consumed.
Moreover, nine search warrants were requested for homes in Buenos Aires as part of the investigation.
The November 7 announcement stated that the investigation needs to carry on, as there are additional steps to complete such as fixing the victim’s damaged netbook and examining other devices confiscated during the probe, which are yet to be processed.
Payne spent time vacationing in Argentina with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. Before his passing, he had captured and shared glimpses of their trip online. Snapshots from his account revealed the pair enjoying meals together, discussing plans to ride horses, and having a pleasant day in Argentina. Just before his unfortunate accident, Payne shared a final snapshot on Snapchat, which showed him and Cassidy in swimsuits. On social media, they had mentioned that Cassidy was returning to Florida to be with their dog Nala while he remained in Argentina.
Cassidy shared in a video on October 14 that she was eager to return to the U.S., stating, “I’m longing to leave,” and showing her journey back home. She explained that while South America holds a special place in her heart, she dislikes staying put for extended periods of time. Her initial plan to stay for five days had unexpectedly turned into two weeks, prompting her to yearn for home.
Following Liam’s passing, Cassidy expressed feelings of being utterly bewildered and stated that the recent days had not felt genuine.
In a part of an Instagram post dated October 18, she wrote, “My dear Liam, you are everything. I want you to know that I loved you without conditions and deeply. I will continue to love you for the rest of my life. I love you, Liam.
Following Liam Payne’s tragic demise, his bandmates from One Direction – Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan – conveyed their profound sorrow. In a joint Instagram post on October 17th, they penned, “We are utterly devastated by the news of Liam’s passing.” They added that they would take some time to mourn and absorb the loss of their cherished brother. The group formed on ‘The X Factor’ in 2010, achieved immense success, but parted ways in 2015.
They continued, “The memories we shared with him will forever be cherished.” Expressing their thoughts, they said, “Our focus now is with his family, friends, and fans who adored him as much as we did. We will deeply miss him. Our love goes out to you Liam.”
Apart from the joint statement, each member also shared individual tributes. Niall Horan, who hosted a concert in Buenos Aires on October 2nd that Payne attended, wrote on Instagram, “The bond and friendship we had is rare in a lifetime.” He further shared his regret for not knowing it would be their last goodbye.
Zayn Malik postponed the U.S. leg of his tour following the heart-wrenching loss.
