The Gunns are back in AEW.
Tonight’s AEW Dynamite episode caught The Hurt Syndicate off guard when the previous AEW Tag Team Champions, absent from TV for months, made an appearance. Although AEW hinted at their return, it was still an unanticipated move. In the ring, MVP, Bobby Lashley, and Shelton Benjamin were discussing Private Party, implying they are now open to business and ready to inflict pain on anyone who crosses their path. Seizing the moment, Colten and Austin Gunn confronted the stable directly.
Austin and Colten Gunn To Challenge for AEW Tag Titles
They shared that it had been two years since they last had a chance to vie for championships following their unexpected dethronement. MVP expressed his admiration for their father, Billy Gunn, and hinted at giving them an opportunity “next week,” without specifying the exact day. To conclude, he affectionately referred to them as “The Ass Boys,” a nickname they once disliked but now seem to embrace.
Following their defeat for the tag team titles, they aligned with Jay White and Juice Robinson to establish Bullet Club Gold, also known as the “Bang Bang Gang.” This move garnered support from fans, as both Robinson and White are highly popular figures in AEW. Last year, they claimed the ROH Six Man Belts, which were later combined with the AEW Trios belts. However, upon their subsequent loss, they gradually faded from television appearances. Their final match took place on the AEW Collision event in September 2024.
It’s refreshing to witness new duos competing for the tag team titles in AEW, as this aspect hasn’t been particularly exciting over the last few years. This sudden change might be setting up for a larger storyline involving these two teams.
Currently, The Acclaimed band has disbanded, offering an ideal opportunity for Gunn to mend relationships with his children through a TV narrative. Earlier, they formed part of a popular group (although briefly), but The Gunns fell out with their father and The Acclaimed. For now, Max Caster is pursuing solo projects, but this could provide Austin and Colten with some temporary activities.
The Gunns on Working with Billy Gunn
In 2023 on the Wrestling Perspective Podcast, Austin Gunn shared that he and Colten had wanted to explore their own paths and test fresh concepts. Austin explained, ‘It’s challenging to take Billy Gunn’s advice when he says something might not succeed, as ambitious beginners, we were eager to experiment and discover if ideas would work. He typically explains the reasons why it won’t work, but he always allows us the liberty to proceed. He essentially said, “I’ll show you or explain why this might not pan out, but feel free to go ahead and do whatever you wish.”‘
As a movie-goer reflecting on this cinematic journey, I must confess that there were moments when I found myself yearning to leap from my seat and embark on an adventure proposed by the characters. Yet, the wise words of caution echoed by one character often left me hesitating, with thoughts like ‘Ah, if only we could take that risk.’
However, there were instances where I dared to defy those warnings, venturing forth into uncharted territories and experiencing failure. But in these trials, I learned valuable lessons, acknowledging the foresight of the sage advisor.
Then again, there were times when we disregarded the counsel and plunged ahead with a collective spirit, hoping to create something extraordinary. It’s not always easy to heed their advice, but it serves as a reminder that sometimes, wisdom comes from those who have walked this path before us.
