The Kardashian family knew the Menendez brothers long before their infamous murder case.
It’s been stated by Kris Jenner that her former spouse, Robert Kardashian, frequently socialized with Erik Menendez – a man who, together with his brother Lyle Menendez, is currently imprisoned for murdering their parents José Menendez and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez – on a weekly basis throughout the ’80s.
During the premiere of The Kardashians on February 6, the matriarch shared with her daughter, who goes by Kim Kardashian, that she had known some men in the past. She mentioned that Erik would often visit and play tennis with Kim’s father during their weekends.
For Kim, who grew up knowing that her father defended O.J. Simpson during his 1994 murder trial, what stands out to her the most about the brothers is how the commotion from their own court case stirred up the entire neighborhood when she was just a teenager.
She shared with Kris, “My father used to discuss that particular incident, and since I was raised in Beverly Hills, I can recall all aspects of it.
However, thirty years on, the reality TV personality now holds a different perspective regarding the brothers. This transformation stems from her legal education and activism focused on criminal justice reform, which has broadened her understanding.
In a private moment, Kim expressed that having more life experience and understanding the system better has given her a completely new perspective on it.
Additionally, she endorses their release from prison, following the 2024 premiere of Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story.” This production has brought fresh attention to their case, leading Kim to conclude that they are not monstrous individuals at all.
In an opinion piece published by NBC News in October, she stated that she had interacted with Lyle and Erik. These two gentlemen, as she described them, are compassionate, insightful, and truthful individuals.
While Kim pointed out that the actions are not justifiable, she emphasized that the criminal justice system should not overlook the individuals’ transformations, considering they are now in their 50s.
The 44-year-old stated, “I’m not convinced that keeping them imprisoned for their entire lives was a fitting punishment for such a complex case. If this crime had happened and gone to trial in modern times, I feel strongly that the verdict would have been significantly altered.
Apart from her, many others share similar feelings. In fact, last year, former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón expressed his intention to suggest that the life-without-parole sentences of Lyle and Erik be changed to a term of 50 years to life, with potential for parole.
At the time, Kim said a possible re-sentencing would be “righting a significant wrong.”
This situation underscores the significance of questioning decisions and pursuing the truth, even when there seems to be no doubt about innocence,” she stated on her Instagram Story.
Lyle and Erik’s re-sentencing trial is set to begin March 20.

In my professional opinion as a lifestyle expert, I don’t feel that serving their entire lives in prison was the fitting penalty for such a multi-layered case. If this crime had occurred and gone through trial in our current times, I am convinced the verdict would have unfolded quite differently.
Additionally, it’s not just her who shares this sentiment. In the latter part of last year, former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón expressed his intention to suggest that Lyle and Erik serve a revised sentence of 50 years to life, with the potential for parole, in replacement of their current life without parole sentences.
At the time, Kim said a possible re-sentencing would be “righting a significant wrong.”
She emphasized that it’s crucial to question and pursue the truth, even if innocence isn’t at stake, as she pointed out through this instance, which she shared on her Instagram Story.
Lyle and Erik’s re-sentencing trial is set to begin March 20.
