Dungeons & Dragons Requests Fan Feedback to Shape New Subclasses

2025 marks a period of exploration and innovation for Dungeons & Dragons, as the blueprint for fresh content builds upon previous work. The latest 5th edition rulebook, released in 2024, has been primarily developed based on player feedback, as indicated by Wizards of the Coast. This emphasis on incorporating player suggestions seems to be a guiding principle moving forward, with new content undergoing playtesting.

Most recently, Dungeons & Dragons has made available playtest versions of the upcoming new subclasses in the Forgotten Realms books, scheduled for release this year. They’re inviting players to provide feedback through a survey, which may influence adjustments before the rules for these subclasses are finalized.

The “Unearthed Arcana” PDF containing the subclass playtest became available on D&D Beyond on January 28th. However, it’s only recently, on February 5th, that a survey requesting player feedback was launched. In this survey, players are asked to evaluate the subclass materials found in “Unearthed Arcana” using a traffic light system of Green (positive), Yellow (caution), and Red (negative). At the moment, there isn’t a specified end date for when the survey will close. If you’re keen on influencing the development of the new Forgotten Realms subclasses, it would be beneficial to review the materials as soon as possible. Keep in mind that these books are slated for release later this year, so earlier feedback has a higher chance of being considered in future revisions.

During the process of playtesting for tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, players have a valuable chance to engage. This not only provides them with an early look at potential character enhancements, but also offers a platform for them to express their opinions directly to Wizards of the Coast about these new features.

Early Draft of New D&D Subclasses Available on D&D Beyond

Interested players can find the preview of the freshly updated and new subclasses coming soon in the Forgotten Realms, by checking out the playtest PDF on D&D Beyond. This document outlines three revised subclasses destined for the upcoming books, as well as five entirely novel subclass choices. Keep in mind that the names and rules of each class in this playtest document may undergo further changes. Here are the subclasses featured in the D&D Beyond playtest:

Revised Subclasses

  • Cleric – Knowledge Domain
  • Fighter – Purple Dragon Knight
  • Wizard – Bladeslinger

New Subclasses

  • Bard – College of the Moon
  • Paladin – Oath of the Noble Genies
  • Ranger – Winter Walker
  • Rogue – Scion of the Three
  • Sorcerer – Spellfire Sorcery

This testing guide outlines specifics about feats, skills, and spells for each of these 8 subclass choices, enabling players to construct their characters using them in their games (with the Dungeon Master’s approval). However, playing the game is not mandatory to fill out the survey. D&D enthusiasts can offer feedback by reading the document and examining the details about every subclass as well.

2025 will see more than just these new subclasses being introduced, as the “Eberron: Forge of the Artificer” book is expected to introduce some fresh and updated Artificer subclasses as well. If any of these options pique your interest, they should be included in the official rules when the “Forgotten Realms” set launches in November 2025. The specifics about the subclasses will be found in the “Forgotten Realms” Player’s Guide, while the Adventure Guide within the set will be more geared towards Dungeon Masters.
