After more than a dozen years, Hiro Fujiwara, who brought us “Kaichou wa Maid-sama!”, is coming back with a new series to celebrate her 20th year as a manga artist. This news has added even more enthusiasm to the current surge of shojo manga, and as an author known for one of the most impactful shojo romances from the early to mid-2000s, Fujiwara is now working on another potential success – this time featuring a romantic comedy centering around cats.
According to a recent update from LaLa magazine’s official account on X, Hiro Fujiwara, the creator of Maid-sama’, has launched a brand-new series titled Neko ni Wagamama (Selfish Cat) in the latest issue of LaLa DX, released on February 5th, 2025. The story revolves around Rin, a high school student who takes in a stray cat that transforms into her aloof classmate Tachibana when daybreak arrives. An intriguing opening color page for the new series was also unveiled, showcasing Rin and Tachibana lounging on a couch with cute cat ears.

Maid-Sama Returns After 12 Years With A New Chapter and An All-New Cat Romance
Initially appearing in LaLa magazine under the pseudonym Hiro Izumi in April 2005, Fujiwara is poised to commemorate two decades as a published manga artist this year, and her latest series serves as an ideal milestone. Characters similar to Usui and Misaki from previous times have graced the cover of the most recent LaLa DX issue in celebration, while fans were additionally delighted by a bonus chapter of Maid-sama! that takes place prior to Usui and Misaki’s relationship, where Misaki and her companions search for a lost cat.
Fortunately, Hiro Fujiwara’s official X account has generously given fans a sneak peek into the upcoming chapter, featuring a playful “kiss” between Usui and Misaki. The first page of this bonus chapter even showcases an endearing sketch of the beloved couple donning matching cat ears, hinting at the charming start of the new series’ launch.

In terms of the recently unveiled series, “Neko ni Wagamama” was initially disclosed in the January issue of LaLa DX which came out in December 2024. Since Hiro Fujiwara’s manga, Maid-sama, concluded in 2013, Neko ni Wagamama signifies his comeback following a span of twelve years. The narrative revolves around Rin, who is usually allergic to cats but brings home a seemingly frail one she finds at the shrine she visits for its feline residents. Remarkably, Rin does not exhibit any allergy symptoms with this new cat, enabling her to nurture and observe it closely for the first time. Interestingly, the weak cat that Rin adopts turns out to be her stern classmate Tachibana, who transforms into a cat at night, providing Rin with an unexpected discovery upon waking up in the morning.
Observing the growing fanbase for shows like “The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today,” it’s evident that Hiro Fujiwara’s latest manga is bound to captivate readers instantly. Alas, the long-awaited second season of “Maid-sama!” remains elusive, but perhaps this new cat-themed romantic comedy series could serve as a delightful substitute.
