As a movie critic, I must admit that the trailer for “Hurry Up Tomorrow” left me somewhat puzzled regarding The Weeknd’s creative intentions. However, it’s evident that this film, which stars Abel Tesfaye and Jenna Ortega, draws inspiration from the macabre world of Stephen King.
The trailer unveiled a musical psychological thriller where Tesfaye finds himself in a harrowing predicament reminiscent of the iconic horror tale “Misery.” In one scene, he lies helpless in bed as Ortega towers menacingly above him.
With the film set to hit theaters on May 16th, we eagerly await more clarity about its intriguing narrative. For now, fans can stream The Weeknd’s album that serves as the basis for this movie.
Tomorrow, a movie I’m involved with, was crafted by Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and Trey Edward Shults, with the latter also serving as the director. In this production, I step into a fictionalized role of myself, embarking on an introspective journey filled with philosophical depth and the enigma of a stranger. The movie appears to be immersed in surreal and expressive storytelling, yet it subtly nods towards horror classics, such as those based on Stephen King’s works. Notably, there are moments that echo “Misery” and even hint at the chilling atmosphere of “The Shining”.
A couple of days ago, my sixth studio album hit the shelves, and now, I’m thrilled to share that a movie inspired by it is on its way! However, given that the film will be based on the album, the predictions aren’t exactly clear-cut. Fans have a few months to decipher its meanings, but so far, critics have praised it as self-reflective and philosophical, delving into themes of renewal and atonement.
Tesfaye cited several influences for his album, mentioning films, although none of Stephen King’s adaptations were included. He specifically pointed out that the scores from “Midnight Express” and “Scarface,” both composed by Giorgio Moroder, significantly influenced this project. Moreover, he regarded this as the conclusion of a trilogy initiated with his last two albums, likening the entire collection to Dante’s “Divine Comedy.
Inevitably, the movie will strive to meet all the grand expectations set for it. Following his previous acting role in the HBO original series “The Idol“, Tesfaye faced a considerable amount of criticism. In this production, he portrayed a dishonest swindler and allegedly influenced the narrative towards more explicit and sexually charged content. Unfortunately, the show did not succeed, and a significant portion of its failure was attributed to Tesfaye himself. There were even claims that he spearheaded a creative transformation within the series during production, which is when director Amy Seimetz departed from the project.
The movie “Tomorrow’s Rush” opens in cinemas on May 16th. You can already listen to it on popular music streaming platforms.
