Fans of “The Last of Us” are displeased with a contentious adjustment being planned for Season 2 of the HBO series. When Naughty Dog and Sony rolled out “The Last of Us Part 2” in 2020, it sparked debate among PlayStation enthusiasts due to several questionable modifications. At the forefront of this game’s controversy was a fresh character, Abigail “Abby” Anderson, who was introduced in the sequel. While Ellie and Joel are undeniably the main characters loved by the Naughty Dog series, Abby is clearly the third most significant figure and plays a key role in the second installment. Given this, it’s expected that she will continue to be a crucial character in the upcoming season of the show. It remains to be seen how HBO will handle the events of the second game, but whatever approach they take will undoubtedly include Abby.
Initially, some people were divided about Bella Ramsey being chosen as Ellie, and this controversy has intensified since her casting was announced. Notably, HBO placed great emphasis on finding a suitable actress for the character Abby, yet it seems they may have missed the mark in this instance.
For some time now, there’s been speculation about Kaitlyn Dever playing Abby due to doubts about whether Dever could convincingly portray the character’s muscular physique. It was thought that HBO might ask Dever to bulk up for the role, but this assumption was incorrect as HBO has confirmed it did not require any body changes from her. The series creator, Neil Druckmann, stated that Abby’s physical appearance is insignificant in the TV show. It seems puzzling why it could be significant in the game but not the series, but that addresses the casting of Dever. In any case, fans of The Last of Us are expressing their disappointment.
One fan of the news expresses their preference by stating, “I would have preferred they invested more effort in matching Abby’s appearance with the original source, but what truly matters is their physicality and how they respond to challenges like movement and combat. Abby’s strength contributes significantly to her appeal, much like Ellie’s switchblade does. While it’s not a deal-breaker, I must admit it raises some concerns.
A supporter comments, “I believe she could’ve had slightly more muscle mass than Abby, but it should have been a bit more. Given that she’s portrayed as a soldier, it seems reasonable.” Another fan reinforces the idea, “It’s essential for her character development. Notice how many actors build their physiques to play heroic or other roles. This aspect feels unusual to me.
Certainly, it’s true that not all fans are troubled by the character change, and some argue that Abby’s appearance isn’t crucial to her identity. However, initial responses seem to indicate that this view might be uncommon.
