According to a recent update on their official site, Developer Sports Interactive and publisher Sega have chosen not to proceed with Football Manager 25. Instead, they are directing their efforts towards the upcoming version of the game.
In this post, the developers share their reasons for canceling Football Manager 25. They aimed to make significant improvements in terms of technology and visuals compared to previous versions, but encountered numerous challenges during development. The news follows a shift in the game’s release date from its initial November 2024 slot to March 2025.
The studio proudly boasts about offering top-notch games that provide you with endless fun and are worth every second and cent spent. With the release of FM25, our aim was to develop the most significant technological and visual upgrade in the series in decades, paving the way for a new epoch.
Eventually, even though the developers were advancing with their work on the new game, Sports Interactive eventually understood that they couldn’t meet the necessary deadlines without compromising the quality and shine the project deserved.
Because we’ve been transparent about the numerous hurdles we’ve encountered so far, and many more unexpected ones too, unfortunately, we haven’t managed to meet our objectives in sufficient parts of the game, despite the tireless work of our dedicated team. Every choice to postpone the launch was made with the intention of bringing the game closer to our desired quality, however, as we neared crucial deadlines at the start of the year, it became increasingly evident that we wouldn’t reach the necessary standard, even with the revised schedule.
As a gamer diving into Football Manager 25, I’ve got to share some insights. Although we’ve nailed quite a few objectives and milestones during development, the truth is, the overall gaming experience and user interface are not quite there yet. From my playtesting sessions, it seems we’re almost hitting the mark, but the game still falls short of meeting our studio’s high standards.
Although several aspects of the game meet our expectations, the overall player experience and user interface require more improvement. Extensive testing has confirmed this, including feedback from players. The changes we’re making to the game are on the right track, but we still need to work harder to reach the high standards you should expect.
The studio concludes its announcement by revealing they are currently developing the upcoming version of Football Manager. This gives them the necessary time to improve the game, as it didn’t quite meet their usual high standards in Football Manager 25.
Originally slated for release in September, Football Manager 25 was a significant milestone for the franchise as the studio transitioned to the Unity engine. Unfortunately, the project has been terminated. Sega and Sports Interactive have reassured pre-order customers that they will receive full refunds from authorized retailers.
