Wonder Woman Game in Turmoil, Is Still ‘Years Away from Release’, New Report Claims

As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the development of the Wonder Woman title by Monolith Productions, the brilliant minds behind Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. However, a recent report from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg suggests that we might still be waiting for quite some time, as the project is reportedly facing substantial challenges and remains far from release, potentially years away.

Initially unveiled in December 2021, the DC project has faced difficulties in coming together and underwent a restart, including a change of directors, around a year ago. According to insiders sharing information with Schreier, the game may still be several years from completion and there’s uncertainty if it will ever reach the market. To date, the game has already surpassed a cost of $100 million and no longer incorporates the Nemesis system that was popular in Monolith’s previous two games.

As per Schreier, the initial concept for Wonder Woman involved a revamp of the Nemesis system where the game’s title character would form friendships with adversaries. However, this idea was later discarded, and the game has now shifted towards a more conventional action-adventure format.

For approximately three years prior to the announcement of Wonder Woman in 2021, Monolith Productions was reportedly developing a new intellectual property (IP) featuring experimental procedural storytelling. However, Warner Bros, the publisher, seemed less enthusiastic about creating new characters and worlds from the ground up. Despite executives understanding that this project might not materialize, they delayed making an official cancellation for three years.

Initially, the leader of the studio, Kevin Stephens, along with most of his director colleagues, chose to depart from the developer at that time for EA. Those who stayed behind began working on the Wonder Woman game we recognize today. However, remnants of the aftermath are reportedly still present, and these, combined with complications pertaining to the technology of the game, have led Schreir’s sources to express doubt about the game ever being released.
