The Russo Brothers are back working on Marvel’s Avengers films, leading some speculation that they may also contribute to the upcoming X-Men reboot by their creators. This possibility has sparked excitement among fans who hope the brothers can undo, or at least lessen, the negative impact of Phase Five on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Under this pact, they will reportedly steer numerous upcoming projects, and one of those projects is rumored to be none other than the highly-anticipated ‘X-MEN’ film!

The fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been marred by a series of setbacks. Following the success of Avengers: Endgame, Disney and Marvel have struggled with one flop after another, with exceptions being Spider-Man: No Way Home, predominantly a Sony production, Deadpool and Wolverine, a Fox property that Ryan Reynolds played a role in producing. This trend is largely attributed to the companies’ less than stellar recruitment methods and directives given to their writers such as “avoid comic book material.
The writers themselves acknowledged this, and to give an example, Black Widow writer Jac Schaeffer stated: “I don’t prioritize sticking to the comic book narrative that is discriminatory or contradicts my personal values.” This means she didn’t feel bound by a pre-established storyline for her film. Instead, she was primarily concerned with advancing her own objectives—a trend often seen in today’s Hollywood productions.
The Russo Brothers stand out, as every Marvel movie they’ve helmed has been a blockbuster success. From “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Civil War” to “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”, their films and stories have remained consistent. They adhered closely to the established comic lore, and visually, their work was remarkably similar to the original sources. Audiences appreciated this fidelity, which may be why Kevin Feige invited them to return.
As a film enthusiast, I’m excitedly sharing the buzz that the Russo Brothers have reportedly sealed a fresh deal with Feige. This partnership could see them contributing to various forthcoming projects, such as the reimagined X-Men series, following the completion of the multiverse saga. At present, we’ve merely been informed they’re supervising the project, which might imply they’ll serve more as consultants than directors. If this is true, it remains uncertain whether their advice will be taken and implemented during filming.
Having the Russo Brothers supervise the X-Men movies is a positive move for Marvel, but it would be even better if they were confirmed as directors instead. With their expertise, they’ll undoubtedly face a challenging task when it comes to this specific group of superheroes. The X-Men films produced by FOX Studios have generally been well-received, despite some less-than-stellar movies in the mix. They stayed true to the comics and had solid storylines for the most part. Integrating the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whether through a multiverse approach or another method, will require more panache and tension to make it truly captivating.
Additionally, there’s the matter of deciding which plot they’ll adopt and who will make up the cast. For years, Hugh Jackman has been the perfect live-action portrayal of Wolverine, much like Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. Any actor they choose will inevitably be compared to the previous X-Men actors. There are also whispers that Jackman might reprise his role as Wolverine for another decade with Marvel, which means he could potentially be part of it.
For now, it seems undeniably clear that the Russo Brothers will continue with Marvel Studios for some time. However, whether they’ll be able to rebuild the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still uncertain.
