It has been reported by a trustworthy source that a game based on DC’s The Flash has been scrapped. DC boasts one of the most esteemed collections of characters in literature and media, with heroes like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and more forming an impressive lineup that can rival Marvel’s renowned Avengers team. Although DC has faced challenges keeping pace with Marvel in film production for quite some time, there is optimism that this trend may soon shift as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy is leading a revamped DC universe, which will debut with Superman this summer. Since Marvel appears to be experiencing a lull, this could be an ideal moment for DC to rejuvenate its universe.
Although DC has made numerous attempts at film adaptations, Warner Bros. hasn’t given the entire DC universe much room to grow in gaming. Most of DC’s AAA games have primarily centered around Batman and his associates. Of course, exceptions like DC Universe Online and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (which is essentially an Arkham spin-off) do exist. Fans have been longing for a new Superman game, but Warner Bros. hasn’t addressed their requests yet. As for Wonder Woman, there has been ongoing development on a new game for quite some time now, but rumors suggest it’s stuck in development limbo. Reports indicate that over $100 million has been invested in the project, and it was rebooted in 2024. However, there are fears that it may never see the light of day.
The Flash Game Reportedly Cancelled
Despite Wonder Woman’s game still being in development, it appears that a title based on The Flash has been shelved. As per a recent report by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, Warner Bros. Montreal (the team behind both Gotham Knights and Batman: Arkham Origins) had been working on a new game featuring The Flash. This project was given the go-ahead following the studio’s consideration of various concepts post-Gotham Knights. The ideas included an enhanced version of Gotham Knights and a Constantine game that garnered some interest, but ultimately failed to secure complete approval. The Flash game progressed initially, but unfortunately met its end in 2023 when Ezra Miller’s The Flash movie underperformed at the box office.
The poor performance of “The Flash” movie was due to several factors, such as disputes regarding its lead actor, a complex multiverse plotline, the ongoing DC universe reboot, the film’s lackluster quality, and many other issues. Interestingly, The Flash had just wrapped up a successful 10-year television run around the same time. It appears that there is still an appreciation for The Flash among audiences, but it seems Warner Bros. may have misread the movie’s failure as a lack of interest in the speedster character. Unfortunately, it remains uncertain if The Flash will ever receive his own video game.
James Gunn has shown enthusiasm about developing fresh video games inspired by his latest DC universe, but there’s no confirmation if any projects have been approved as part of this plan. A possible new Flash movie might be in the works under Gunn, which could eventually lead to a new game, although it may still be quite some time before this comes to fruition. At present, we are aware of the upcoming DC film schedule, and The Flash is not included at the moment. However, fans have been eagerly anticipating a potentially fantastic Flash video game after years of waiting, and it’s unfortunate that this seems to be delayed for now.
