Jurassic World Rebirth: Scarlett Johansson’s Zora & the New Human Characters Revealed

The launch date for “Jurassic World Rebirth” is rapidly approaching, and fans of the 1993 classic “Jurassic Park” have plenty to look forward to. As producer Frank Marshall revealed in an exclusive sneak peek at the movie provided by Vanity Fair, they’ve worked tirelessly with writer David Koepp and executive producer Steven Spielberg to rekindle the franchise’s sense of fear. “Jurassic World Rebirth” centers around a group of undercover operatives who are sent on a mission to collect DNA samples from the three largest surviving dinosaurs on an isolated island that once housed the initial research facility for creating a dinosaur-themed amusement park.

The term “Rebirth” represents a fresh start for the franchise, happening five years post the finale of the Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard-led “Jurassic World” trilogy. However, this new installment introduces an entirely distinct set of characters. Aside from the fact that some of these new faces may not make it through, what information do we have about them?

Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson)

Scarlett Johansson has harbored a long-standing desire to join the Jurassic Park series. As a child, she was deeply enamored with the 1993 original and went so far as to sleep in a Jurassic Park tent in her shared bedroom with her sister for an entire year. Whenever the industry news would mention a new Jurassic film, she would eagerly share this information with her agents, expressing her readiness: “Hey, I’m available!

Marshall portrays Bennett as an exceptional field agent. Throughout her entire career, she served in the military. After retiring from service, she likely worked for a private security company for some time, and now she runs her own operations. Johansson played a significant role in developing Bennett’s character, explaining that it was essential to understand what was at stake for her beyond just money or power. She wanted the audience to feel a personal connection with her, as they should care about and root for the characters. The film wouldn’t be compelling solely based on dinosaurs, Johansson notes. Bennett, according to Johansson, is not your typical mercenary character in creature features. Instead, she’s someone who has committed herself to saving others and seems burnt out at a professional crossroads.

Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey)

In the upcoming series Rebirth, there won’t be any reappearance of legacy characters, but actor Jonathan Bailey, portraying paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, hinted that his character shares a past with Sam Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant. Bailey expressed the challenge he faced in making his character successful, stating, “I’ve always aimed to earn Dr. Alan Grant’s approval. You’ll need to watch and find out what connection, if any, exists between them.

Bailey continued discussing Dr. Loomis, stating that he “strengthens substantial, intellectual and emotional points about the natural world and our human existence.” However, it’s evident from the preview that he is least prepared to endure on a perilous island teeming with mutated dinosaurs. Yet, his role is crucial because he excels in acquiring dinosaur DNA.

Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali)

In essence, Rebirth is set to preserve the most effective elements from some of Steven Spielberg’s iconic adventures, such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jaws. To elaborate on the connection with Jaws, Jonathan Bailey sees his character as analogous to Richard Dreyfuss’ Hooper, while Scarlett Johansson’s character is akin to Roy Scheider’s Martin Brody. Mahershali Ali’s Duncan Kincaid, meanwhile, is reminiscent of Robert Shaw’s shark hunter Quint who ultimately became shark bait.

Ali found the comparison intriguing, yet didn’t perceive it in the same light during the shoot. His take on Kincaid, Bennett’s team leader? “Kincaid is a man who, at this stage of his life, has chosen to disconnect from the grid. He resides in Suriname [a country in northern South America], but he’s someone who has been a close friend of Zora’s and is always ready to lend a hand when she requires help with clandestine matters. He’s a jovial individual, but he’s undeniably faced some hardships in his life. To sum it up, he’s learned to cope with his wounds and is making the most of the life he has.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd.
