Mobile Suit Gundam, a series that’s stood the test of time, initially burst onto the scene with the original anime, introducing characters like Amuro and Char. Since then, it’s jumped between timelines, alternate realities, and more to maintain its relevance. Coming up next month, the new Gundam project, Gundam GQuuuuuux, will debut in North American cinemas, offering fans a sneak peek at the first three episodes scheduled for release in 2025. The recent Sapporo Snow Festival has added another homage to the franchise’s mechs, as the earliest and most modern Mobile Suits gather together for the very first time.
Fans of Gundam should brace themselves for some significant twists in the upcoming series, Gundam GQuuuuuux, especially since its creator is none other than Hideaki Anno, known for his work on Neon Genesis Evangelion. In this new venture, Anno delves into young mech pilots grappling with their world, a theme he’s familiar with. Unlike Evangelion, the story of GQuuuuuux won’t involve aliens attacking the mechs. Instead, fans can expect some fresh interpretations of classic characters that have contributed to the enduring popularity of the Gundam franchise.
Gundam Worlds Collide in Snow
Each winter, the Sapporo Snow Festival, a long-established Japanese tradition dating back to 1950 and supported by the Japan Self-Defense Forces, has been a spectacle. In recent times, it’s embraced its love for anime, showcasing sculptures based on series like “Delicious in Dungeon,” “Yu-Gi-Oh!,” “That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime,” “Golden Kamuy,” and many more. This year, the spotlight is back on Gundam as both the original model that sparked it all stands alongside the latest mech from GQuuuuuux.
Standing an impressive five meters tall, the Gundam snow statue will remain standing until February 11th. Fortunately, you won’t have to travel to an Eastern country to witness this mech homage as the official Gundam social media account has provided a sneak peek. Given the theme of Hideaki Anno’s Gundam series, this snow sculpture is even more fitting with what’s to come.
