PSN Finally Back Online, But Some Problems Persist After Biggest Outage Since 2011

Update #11 [Sun 9th Feb 2025, 12am]: After a brief interruption, the PlayStation Network is mostly operational again.

Great news! According to the main PSN Service Status site, everything seems to be running smoothly. However, we’re seeing a lot of users complaining that they’re getting kicked out of different online games or experiencing connection drops while utilizing online features on both PS5 and PS4 consoles.

It appears as though the network is temporarily experiencing a delay in order to sort things out. Given that over 200,000 users have logged in recently, it’s understandable that this would place considerable load on Sony’s servers.

Despite not yet understanding the cause, the PlayStation Network (PSN) experienced an extended outage lasting approximately 20 hours. However, we’re optimistic that the most severe issues have now passed.

In the coming days, it will be intriguing to discover if Sony shares additional details about the recent downtime. Should they do so, we’ll make sure to keep you informed with updates.

Update #10 (Saturday, February 8, 2025, 8:30 pm): The PlayStation Network seems to be gradually coming back online, with an influx of positive connection test results and login attempts being shared on social media platforms.

If we consider this to be the conclusion of the outage, it continued for approximately 20 straight hours, starting at 11 pm GMT on February 7, 2025, and ending at 8:30 pm GMT on February 8, 2025.

Sony has not issued a statement on the downtime, and we still don’t know what the actual cause was.

Update #9 [Sat 8th Feb 2025, 7pm]: It’s approximately 20 hours now since the PlayStation Network started experiencing problems. So far, we haven’t received any detailed updates from Sony beyond their usual social media posts acknowledging the issues.

At the moment, it appears that PlayStation Network (PSN) connectivity is experiencing some fluctuations. Surprisingly, a few users have been able to engage in online games, but others have encountered no issues when sending messages or downloading titles from their library.

It’s all a bit up and down, then, but make no mistake — the vast majority of PS5 and PS4 users are still running into the dreaded WS-116449-5 error code.

We’re approaching the 24-hour point quite closely, and it’s then that some significant inquiries will become necessary.

Update #8 [Sat 8th Feb 2025, 3:30pm]: It appears that a significant number of PS5 and PS4 users can now utilize certain online features, such as viewing their friends list and parts of the PlayStation Store. Additionally, some users are able to download games from their library.

However, it looks like most people are still being hit with the WS-116449-5 error code whenever they try to access anything connected to the PSN, and online games remain unplayable.

However, these findings could possibly indicate a gradual revival of the network, although it’s important not to get too optimistic at this stage.

Sony still hasn’t released an official statement on the outage.

Update #7 [Saturday, February 8th, 2025, 2:30 PM]: PlayStation Network (PSN) has been offline for approximately 15 hours, and as parts of North America are becoming more active, discontentment on social media platforms is escalating.

A significant number of users are demanding reimbursement, whereas others are growing increasingly concerned that this could be a massive cyber assault targeting Sony’s service.

Clearly, we don’t have definitive proof about this at the moment, but Sony (PlayStation) not speaking up on the matter seems to add mystery to it.

A large company such as Sony tends to keep any publicly available information secret until they are certain of the situation, and when they do release details, they will thoughtfully weigh their choices regarding how to present this information in a positive light for public relations purposes.

Unfortunately, it seems we must be patient for now as the duration of this service interruption remains uncertain. Should PlayStation provide an update or any new information arises, we’ll make sure to refresh this post accordingly.

Update #6 [Sat 8th Feb 2025, 11am]: We’re now fast approaching 12 hours of total PSN downtime, with users still running into the WS-116449-5 error code (which basically just means that your console can’t establish a network connection).

Beyond the usual social media posts, PlayStation has not shared any extra details about the cause of the outage.

Over the past few hours, it appears some sections of the network, including messaging and game verification, have been reactivated. However, it’s evident that the majority of users are still unable to log in or perform tasks requiring an internet connection.

Currently, the official PlayStation Network Service Status page shows it’s fully down, indicated by a red color, suggesting that the entire network is currently unavailable.

In Europe, it’s nearly noon, and if the current issue isn’t resolved soon, the feelings of annoyance will likely grow bigger.

Update #5 [Sat 8th Feb 2025, 6:15am]: PSN has been down and offline for over six hours now.

In many Asian regions, users have been unable to access or utilize online functionalities on their PS5 and PS4 systems for a significant portion of the day. Conversely, Europe is just beginning to emerge from sleep, unaware that the service disruption persists. We’re confident that everyone will be delighted to know this issue remains ongoing.

So far, PlayStation’s primary social media platforms have been silent regarding the current issue, leaving us in the dark for more details. Fingers crossed that we’ll hear something soon from their European division.

4th Update on Sat, Feb 8th, 2025, 2am: At last, the English-speaking customer support team from PlayStation has confirmed the continuous PSN downtime.

We’re currently experiencing some problems with PSN, and here’s a link to our Service Status page that confirms the same: [PSN Service Status Page].

It’s clear that the feedback on these social media posts has been far from favorable. In fact, it seems that more users than just a few are experiencing issues, suggesting a large-scale outage affecting not just some, but potentially all PlayStation Network (PSN) users – including those with PS5 and PS4 consoles.

Should it continue for much longer, we’d expect PlayStation to release an official statement.

Update #3 [Sat 8th Feb 2025, 1:15am]: Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan has addressed the PlayStation Network outage and shared that they are currently investigating the issue. They appreciate users’ understanding as they strive to fix the problem promptly.

Despite not having identified the specific issue yet, it’s worth noting that it’s been quite some time since we’ve experienced a PlayStation Network outage on this scale. Despite the network being offline for just a few hours, there have been a steady stream of new reports coming in.

In Europe, it’s still quite early, so we probably won’t get any updates from PlayStation’s European outlets until later in the day.

In the meantime, we’ll update this article again if PlayStation US breaks its silence.

Update #2 [Saturday, February 8th, 12:40am, 2025]: It appears that the PlayStation Network has been out of service for more than an hour, with no signs of activity as of now.

PlayStation is yet to comment on the outage across any of its social media channels.

Update #1 [Sat 8th Feb 2025, 12am]: The status page for the PlayStation Service has been revised, indicating that all components of the PlayStation Network are encountering problems. Approximately 45 minutes ago, the service interruption started.

If Sony, the maker of PlayStation, hasn’t issued a statement about the ongoing service outage through their social media channels so far – it may soon become necessary for them to do so if the issue persists.

It seems that this outage is affecting a large number of users, as more reports about it are coming in every moment.

It appears that the PlayStation Network is experiencing an issue, affecting many, if not all, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 users at the moment.

Approximately twenty minutes ago, reports began surfacing, and it appears that the disruption has expanded rather than diminished. Based on our observations, this appears to be a complete outage; users are unable to log in, retrieve network-based material, or engage in online activities.

It’s oddly stated on the official PSN Service Status page that everything seems fine as I write this, but it appears something is amiss. I guess we’ll have to keep an eye out for updates on the situation.

We’ll also update this story as soon as we know more.

Essentially, significant PlayStation Network (PSN) troubles have been scarce for quite some time. The occasional brief interruptions may arise, but Sony typically resolves these issues swiftly. Let’s hope they can handle any potential problems efficiently in this instance too.
