Over a span of more than 3 decades, “The Simpsons” TV series has held a special place in many hearts, acclaimed for its wit, emotion, and unique talent to depict society’s mirror image by presenting the world in an eccentric manner. Since its premiere in 1989, this show has consistently managed to remain current due to the clever incorporation of pop culture references into its plots. It appeared that no significant cultural occurrence was immune to the Simpsons’ satirical humor – they took aim at blockbuster movies, political scandals, celebrity dramas, and various other topics with their sharp-witted jokes.
The long-running TV series “The Simpsons” has become such a significant part of our societal tapestry that it seems to possess a talent for foreshadowing future events. Audiences have noticed numerous instances where a storyline in an episode mirrored real-life occurrences at a later date. Examples range from Facetime, Donald Trump’s presidency, and the mass of the Higgs-Boson particle (also known as the “God particle”), to many others. Additionally, The Simpsons has shown remarkable foresight in predicting football events, particularly several Super Bowls, as we shall discuss below.
The Simpsons‘ First Streak
One notable instance where an episode of “The Simpsons” seemed to forecast a Super Bowl result occurred in the 1992 episode titled “Lisa the Greek.” In this episode, Lisa feels frustrated because Homer doesn’t share her enthusiasm for her hobbies. Marge suggests that Lisa try showing interest in something Homer enjoys, which happens to be football. To everyone’s surprise, Lisa shows an exceptional talent for predicting football game winners, bringing joy to Homer. They begin spending more time together, enjoying their shared love of football. However, it becomes clear that Homer was only spending time with Lisa to increase his chances of winning bets. For the approaching Super Bowl, Lisa secretly picks the team she hopes will lose, as this would mean Homer would lose the bet but win her affection back, leading to one of the series’ most heartwarming endings.
The fictional character “Lisa the Greek” made her debut on television on January 23, 1992, before Super Bowl XXVI. In that game, the Washington Commanders (previously known as the Washington Redskins) faced off against the Buffalo Bills. Lisa correctly predicted a victory for Washington, and remarkably, this forecast came true in real life. However, what truly makes this episode memorable is not just its initial accuracy but also its ability to consistently predict the winners of the following three Super Bowls. The show’s creators would update the dialogue for each new Super Bowl, and every time they did so, the team that won in the episode went on to win in reality. This means that “The Simpsons” correctly predicted the outcomes of Super Bowl XXVII (Dallas Cowboys beating the Buffalo Bills in 1993), Super Bowl XXVIII (again featuring a Dallas Cowboys victory over the Buffalo Bills in 1994), and Super Bowl XXIX (the San Francisco 49ers defeating the San Diego Chargers in 1995).
The Simpsons Score a Partial Prediction
Titled “Sunday, Not-So-Great Sunday,” this episode of The Simpsons is another Super Bowl-themed adventure. In it, Homer, Bart, and other Springfield locals embark on a trip to Miami, Florida, to witness the big game live. However, their tickets prove to be forgeries, leading them to attempt an undercover entry into the stadium. The show features numerous football figures such as John Madden, who was an NFL commentator at the time, along with Troy Aikman, Rosey Grier, and Dan Marino.
In a playful manner, “Sunday, Cruddy Sunday” didn’t so much predict the Super Bowl winner but rather mocked the Super Bowl experience. Yet, it did subtly hint at future events. The unnamed team in the episode wore uniforms strikingly similar to those of the San Francisco 49ers. Interestingly, the 49ers indeed reached Super Bowl LIV, facing off against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, right here in Miami. However, the prediction was only partly correct as the Kansas City Chiefs emerged victorious in that game.
The Simpsons Predict a Super Bowl Halftime Show
Back in Season 23’s “Lisa Goes Gaga,” I was thrilled to witness Lady Gaga herself grace Springfield! She dropped by to put on a jaw-dropping, halftime-inspired show. Clad in an over-the-top ensemble and soaring above the crowd with her dazzling dance moves and eye-popping spectacle – just like those Super Bowl extravaganzas we all love!
Prior to 2017, Lady Gaga had never taken part in a Super Bowl performance, but there were numerous whispers about her potential involvement. Indeed, in 2017, she made her Super Bowl debut, and her halftime show bore an uncanny resemblance to one depicted on The Simpsons about five years earlier. The outfit she wore during the performance was strikingly similar to that seen in the show, and she even executed the aerial stunt that was featured there as well.
