You’re cordially invited to explore a collection of contemporary comedy films on Prime Video, featuring “You’re Cordially Invited” with Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, and Geraldine Viswanathan. This is the perfect opportunity for you to expand your viewing list beyond this movie! If you find yourself in need of more laughs during double-feature nights, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of films released after 2000 available. These movies range from traditional rom-coms, to genre-blending sci-fi and horror comedies. In other words, the selection is diverse enough to cater to various tastes!
Two friends from rural areas find themselves battling unlucky teenagers in a series of comedies on Prime Video, but one of them transforms into a hero who has an unusual fondness for celery. Don’t miss out on the delightful “You’re Cordially Invited”.
MacGruber
Despite being a box-office disappointment during the summer of 2010, the film “MacGruber” has managed to garner an audience. Remarkably, it even spawned a nearly equally successful sequel series on Peacock in 2021. This movie was inspired by the “Saturday Night Live” skits featuring the hapless character, a MacGyver-like figure who comically failed to defuse bombs in various settings with different unlucky guest stars caught within the explosion’s vicinity.
An unconventional choice, perhaps, to develop into a full-length film, yet with Jorma Taccone of The Lonely Island directing, the movie surpasses expectations set by the originating shorts. With a hilarious performance by Kristen Wiig alongside Will Forte, the star of MacGruber, it’s a non-stop comedy delight for those who appreciate its quirky humor.
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
Initially, the film “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” flew somewhat under the public’s notice, but much like “MacGruber,” it has since garnered a dedicated following. This fanbase is poised to grow, and Prime Video could be the platform to facilitate that growth. Starring Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk from “Creature Commandos,” it’s a hilarious spoof of ’80s slasher films where groups of unnamed attractive young people met their untimely end at the hands of a masked killer one by one.
In essence, these unnamed good-looking young individuals encounter their own demise. The rural pair that these college students fear so intensely turn out to be benevolent hillbillies, renovating a freshly bought lakeside cabin. Regrettably, one after another, the youths succumb to various hazardous situations such as sprinting towards pointed tree branches and plunging headfirst into woodchippers.
Tag
From a heartwarming real-life inspiration, I’d highly recommend the underestimated film titled “Tag.” As a devotee of this cinematic gem, let me share that it revolves around a band of five lifelong friends who engage in an annual game of tag – one month out of the year. Remarkably, one member remains undefeated, but with his upcoming nuptials looming, he’s granted his friends this final opportunity to claim victory over him.
The comedy movie “Tag” boasts an impressive cast including Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress, standout performer Isla Fisher, Annabelle Wallis, Jon Hamm, and Jeremy Renner. Their on-screen camaraderie is electrifying, leaving viewers convinced they’ve been friends for a lifetime, which heightens the emotional impact of the film’s climactic moment.
The Fall Guy
David Leitch’s latest production, titled “The Fall Guy“, falls under the category of a mix between romantic comedies and action movies. This film adds another success to Leitch’s list, which already includes hits like “Hobbs & Shaw” and “Bullet Train“. What makes this film unique is that it holds personal significance for Leitch, given his background as a stuntman. The plot revolves around Ryan Gosling’s character, Colt Seavers, a stuntman who had to retire due to an unfortunate accident. After a gap of 1.5 years, he is pulled back into the world of stunts when he is tasked with finding his former double, Tom Ryder, who has become a famous movie star. Interestingly, Gosling’s character agrees not for Ryder, but to reconnect with Emily Blunt’s character, Jody Moreno, a former camerawoman turned director, who is working on Ryder’s latest action comedy.
The main puzzle is intriguing, yet what truly captivates viewers about “The Fall Guy” is the flair it showcases, Gosling’s allure, and the palpable chemistry between him and Blunt. Add to that delightful supporting roles from Hannah Waddingham, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, and Stephanie Hsu, and “The Fall Guy” is the kind of film that continues to gain more fans as time passes by.
Bridesmaids
The 2011 film “Bridesmaids,” directed by Paul Feig, made Melissa McCarthy a major star. It was one of the most financially successful movies that year and remains just as funny today, even after more than a decade. It’s surprising that the movie’s success, both critically and commercially, didn’t lead to an influx of similar female-led studio comedies. Despite being released in 2011, “Bridesmaids” stands out as one of the best examples of its genre not only for that year but also throughout the entire 2010s.
The story revolves around the character of Kristen Wiig’s Annie Walker, who finds herself somewhat adrift in life. Her friend, Lillian (played by Maya Rudolph), has recently become engaged. In order to fulfill her role as Lillian’s maid of honor, Annie might need to tackle some personal growth beforehand.
