In terms of Fox’s X-Men film series, some standout casting decisions have been made for a superhero franchise that is second to none. Although certain characters have been swapped with younger actors for the prequel movies, one performer in particular will always be linked to his mutant. The portrayal of Wolverine by Hugh Jackman is nothing short of iconic. It’s challenging to envision anyone else in this position, especially considering Jackman has been embodying this character for a remarkable 25 years now, with the first X-Men movie premiering in 2000. Interestingly, Jackman almost didn’t land this role, but surprisingly, Mission: Impossible II gave him a chance at it.
To be precise, the Tom Cruise sequel played a significant role in shaping the X-Men franchise in two primary aspects.
Mission: Impossible II‘s Main Villain Almost Was the Face of Fox’s X-Men Movies
The original casting choice for Wolverine in X-Men was Dougray Scott, however, prior to that, he was cast as the villain in Mission: Impossible II, Sean Ambrose. In the second installment of the blockbuster franchise, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team are determined to stop a deadly, man-made virus from being released on an unsuspecting public. On top of that, Hunt must go head to head with Sean Ambrose, an agent turned terrorist.
For Scott, this opportunity to play Wolverine in X-Men was a significant leap forward, and it appeared his career was gaining speed. However, due to complications during the filming of Mission: Impossible II, he found himself unable to maintain that role. This meant that Scott’s schedule clashed between Mission: Impossible II and X-Men. Unfortunately, the production of X-Men couldn’t wait for Scott, so Jackman stepped in as Wolverine, as reported by Collider.
Mission: Impossible II Almost Had X-Men’s Villain in the Palm of Its Hand
There’s more than one link between “X-Men” and “Mission: Impossible II”, and it revolves around casting. The casting choices in “Mission: Impossible II” actually caused a recast for Wolverine in “X-Men”. Moreover, “Mission: Impossible II” not being able to secure Ian McKellen left his schedule open for him to join the cast of “X-Men”.
As a seasoned movie critic, I must confess that I missed out on the opportunity to witness Sir Ian McKellen in the Tom Cruise-led blockbuster, Mission: Impossible II. However, it turns out he wisely declined that role, leaving him available for other film projects being produced at the same time. Among these was X-Men, where he brilliantly brought the character Magneto to life on screen.
The movie “Mission: Impossible II” inadvertently played a significant role in shaping the cast of “X-Men,” particularly for its two most memorable characters, Wolverine and Magneto. Due to scheduling conflicts, Dougray Scott might not have gotten the opportunity to play Wolverine if he hadn’t been involved in “Mission: Impossible II.” On the other hand, Ian McKellen’s decision to reject “Mission: Impossible II” provided him with the availability to depict Magneto instead.
