In a twist, a dog is Superman’s closest ally. The Puppy Bowl XXI, an annual event on Animal Planet, started during Super Bowl Sunday this year with a special announcement from director James Gunn and his own rescue dog, Ozu – who served as the inspiration for Krypto, the Superdog in the upcoming DC Studios film. Now in its 21st edition, this “ulti-mutt” call-to-adoption television spectacle showcased 142 rescue puppies from 80 shelters across 40 U.S. states and two countries to promote awareness for a truly heroic action: providing forever homes for animals in need.
In this statement, the DC Studios co-chief shares that they are accompanied by their rescue dog, Ozu, during the video message. They adopted Ozu while working on the script for their latest film, “Superman.” As Ozu has significantly impacted their life, he served as the inspiration for a character in the movie – Superman’s loyal companion, Krypto. Speaking about Puppy Bowl XXI, Gunn stated that Krypto, just like Superman, possesses all his powers and is as adorable yet mischievous as numerous pups you might encounter today. Notably, this event marked the debut of the Krypto Super Play, which was given to the pup who exhibited exceptional abilities.
Last October, Gunn posted a tale about his pet dog, who can be seen saving Superman (David Corenswet) in the viral trailer for Superman, which was released in December.

Originally from a crowded backyard with 60 other dogs and having no experience with humans, Ozu proved to be quite challenging, as described by Gunn in a social media post. Upon entering their home, he promptly wrecked the furniture, shoes, and even managed to consume a laptop. It took considerable time before he allowed any physical contact from his new owners.
Gunn went on to say, “I found myself musing, ‘Wonder how challenging life would be if Ozu possessed superpowers?’ This is where Krypto entered the script, altering the narrative as Ozu was shaping my reality.” In a post marking Adopt-a-Dog Month, celebrated by American Humane in October to provide potential adopters with resources for the 3-4 million animals in shelters nationwide, Krypto was referred to as a “less-than-perfect paragon of virtue.
