In the second season of “Squid Game,” Thanos, a fresh character, stirred intense debate among viewers, and the actor portraying him felt his demise was justified before season 3 begins. The much-anticipated return of “Squid Game” in its second season last year became an even greater success on Netflix than its initial run. Much of the excitement generated by the new episodes was due to the array of new characters participating in the lethal children’s games, including a rapper with a questionable past who seemed overly fond of the games for unsettling reasons.
In the second season of Squid Game, Thanos generated the most significant reaction among viewers. However, the moment that drew the largest response was the revelation of his final destiny. Unlike in the games themselves, Thanos met his end during a fight rather than within them. This occurred outside of Gi-Hun’s uprising at the conclusion of the season. The actor who portrayed Thanos, Choi Seung-hyun (also known as T.O.P.), shared with Netflix’s Tudum that when he initially read the script, he felt it was fitting for Thanos to die and thought it was long overdue.
Thanos Actor Reacts to His Death in Squid Game Season 2
In response to a question about Thanos’ demise in Squid Game Season 2, Choi commented, “Thanos is a character who appears to be under the influence of drugs. He’s dangerous, so when I read how he dies in the script, I felt it was long overdue. I thought his death was fitting and timely, and I also believed he deserved to die.” Regarding its seemingly random occurrence within the series narrative, Choi added that this unexpected timing actually enhanced the impact of Thanos’ death, expressing gratitude towards the director and team for executing it in such a way.
When queried about Thanos’ potential actions as Gi-Hun fought back at the end of the season, Choi playfully speculated, “From my perspective, Thanos might have been dancing with his pink troops.” However, it’s worth noting that Choi is appreciative of the fan support he’s received since Season 2’s debut, “To be honest, I haven’t gone looking for them myself, but I get sent a lot of memes and such from friends. Even director Hwang sends me Thanos memes sometimes. Looking at them, I’m amazed by everyone’s creativity. I’m truly grateful for the support you all have given to Thanos.
Why Thanos Was the Way He Was
Speaking candidly about his portrayal of Thanos, Choi described his method as follows: “In essence, Thanos is a character heavily dependent on drugs, which ultimately led to his downfall. I aimed to portray the stark difference between him before and after drug use, as the substances he takes are extremely potent.” However, beneath this surface lies an undercurrent of deep-seated anxiety as well.
Before being affected by substances, Thanos feels profound worry, as Choi explained. He’s quite apprehensive and actually has a character that is easily frightened. But when he’s under the influence of these drugs, he essentially transforms into someone different, correct? This additional complexity in his character makes Thanos all the more intriguing to fans, underscoring why he was so well-liked upon his introduction. As for the next season of Squid Game without Thanos, it will be released on Netflix on June 27th.
