*Warning: This article contains spoilers for the first episode of Unforgotten season 6 episode 1.*
In simple terms, the initial episode of Unforgotten season 6 presented a broad and intricate plotline involving numerous characters, laying the foundation for the rest of the series. However, nothing could have prepared us for the unexpected return of a character from the past, which left us in quite a surprise at the end of the episode.
In the closing scenes, we learn the identity of the human remains that were found in Whitney Marsh.
Sunny (Sanjeev Bhaskar) clarifies to Jessica (Sinéad Keenan) that Gerard Cooper, the individual in question, vanished in 2021. However, further police investigations suggested that, despite no body being recovered, Cooper likely ended his life by leaping into the Thames.
However, Sunny shocks everyone by unveiling an unexpected truth: The detective handling Cooper’s case turns out to be none other than Ram Sidhu, a figure we last encountered during Unforgotten season 4.

In a similar vein, Sanjeev Bhaskar expressed his thoughts as follows: “Ram Sidhu and Sunny had a significantly stronger rivalry compared to any other characters.
Additionally, it reminds us of season 4, where Sunny seems deeply connected to the event that led to Cassie’s death, as if he played a role in it emotionally.
There are many ghosts from his past tugging at him, and their hostile relationship didn’t help matters either. When I read it, my first thought was, ‘Wow, this really took me by surprise.’
Reflecting on season 4, Detective Chief Inspector Ram Sidhu found himself at the heart of the intrigue, being one of the cryptic individuals suspected of committing a crime with a compelling reason behind it.
However, it turns out that Ram wasn’t the actual offender. Instead, he ended up behind bars due to three reasons: firstly, hindering a legal burial, secondly, receiving money related to drug trafficking, and lastly, misusing his authority as a police officer.
According to Bhaskar’s explanation, Sunny may continue to harbor resentment towards Ram because Cassie (Nicola Walker), who was constantly overworked and exhausted from her investigation, felt this way until her unexpected car accident resulted in her untimely demise. This sentiment was mentioned frequently throughout the case.
Initially, some spectators speculated that one of the Season 4 suspects might have intentionally collided with her following subtle hints in the show. However, further investigation revealed that the person behind the deadly accident was actually a car thief.
As someone who loves movies, I must say that the return of a character like Ram, who hasn’t reappeared since earlier seasons on Unforgotten, is definitely something extraordinary and memorable.
However, we anticipate that things might not go smoothly for Sunny when he encounters the other person once more. It seems likely that their interaction won’t be friendly, given their heated argument during their previous encounter in the interview room.
Regarding the central focus of the current season, Unforgotten has yet again presented an intricate mystery involving a fresh set of characters who appear to be linked in some way.
In the summary for season six, we meet a fresh group of characters: Melinda Ricci (MyAnna Buring), a vocal TV commentator residing in Ireland; Martin ‘Marty’ Baines (Max Fairley), an individual with autism living with his mother Dot in Deal, Kent; Asif Syed (Elham Elas), an Afghan preparing for his UK citizenship test; and Juliet Cooper (Victoria Hamilton), a history professor and head of faculty at a university in London.
Although these individuals appear to lead independent lives, they share a complex web of connections stemming from their shared past. It falls upon Jess, Sunny, and their diligent squad to unearth these concealed ties and, in doing so, reveal the real story behind the unsolved murder.
