Staz Nair portrays the main character Virdee in BBC’s fresh take on A A Dhand’s crime series. His role is to investigate and capture a serial killer who preys upon Asian residents in Bradford’s city streets. However, another actor was initially considered for the part of Harry Virdee.
Initially, Sacha Dhawan, renowned for his role in Doctor Who, was slated to headline the film Virdee. However, scheduling issues compelled him to step down from the project. Later, when I received the offer to step into Dhawan’s shoes, it represented my first major leading role, having previously been part of ensemble casts in productions like Supergirl, Rebel Moon, and Game of Thrones.
Nair recounts feeling like receiving a promotion, but questioning one’s readiness for it. In certain ways, they were hesitant to take the lead, even if unintentionally, because they weren’t asked to shape the narrative, set the tone, and be the main reason for audience engagement. This pressure to perform was overwhelming and hard to ignore.
The length of the tale spanning eighteen years meant it held deep connections for numerous individuals, making it an intimidating endeavor. However, recognizing shared traits with the character provided a sense of familiarity.
First, identify the purpose behind the narrative, its intended audience, and then focus on the emotional elements and motivations of the characters. Then, either enhance these characteristics on your own or adapt as necessary to uncover their depths.
Nair mentions: “Many actors struggle with imposter syndrome, questioning if they will eventually be exposed or are just pretending. It was a wonderful chance for me to demonstrate to myself that I am undeniably in the right place, that I can, perhaps you could confirm, lead a show convincingly and do so with determination and authenticity.

In contrast to his role in past productions such as Rebel Moon, Nair’s placement on the cast list for this new project appears to be distinctly altered.
In terms of reality, my experience with this role was distinct because I genuinely gained weight instead of relying on artificial means like muscle-binding or creating an unattainable body image. Unlike some Hollywood productions which may resort to such practices, this narrative doesn’t follow that path.
A man in his mid-thirties, who has a child, is juggling multiple responsibilities amidst a serial killer targeting his community. He’s stretched thin, doing everything he can to protect his city, and then returning home to be a spouse and parent. There simply isn’t time for leisure activities like exercising.
When I read the first book, ‘Streets of Darkness’, Harry seemed quite rugged in his build. Therefore, for this particular role, it was important to enjoy the food while keeping up my fitness level, so I could remain active and physically engaging, yet still appear relatable.
If Nair’s desire for additional seasons of Virdee comes true, it seems he’ll need to keep up that high level of fitness for some time yet.
I’m eager for more; there’s plenty yet unspoken. I find the conclusion intriguing, but I suspect it’s not truly the finale. I believe we have numerous additional books and tales waiting to be shared.
