With the release of Avowed just days away, Xbox is set to kick off its most important year of the current generation

If you’re prepared to splurge, the highly-anticipated release of Avowed is nearly here! This early access launch, timed for Valentine’s Day, presents a unique dilemma for fans of Obsidian RPGs: either spend a pricey evening out on the town, possibly battling over reserved tables, or opt for a pricey night in, debating choices during character creation.

Regardless of whether you decide to spend $90 to play Avowed on Valentine’s Day or wait for its release across PC, Xbox Series X, and Game Pass on February 18, it’s clear that these coming days will mark a significant milestone in Microsoft Gaming. This launch could very well be the starting point of what is likely the most crucial year for Xbox in recent history. And let’s face it, given the anticipation surrounding this release, it really ought to be.

Over the past year, there were moments that felt like the funeral bell tolling. The sound of job losses, studio shutdowns, game postponements, and Game Pass price increases reverberating through the news. It’s been another stormy chapter for a company that seems to be running out of chances, with Xbox finding itself under the microscope as it grapples with selling its expanding multiplatform launch plan, balancing subscription service membership, and addressing worries about how the Series S might affect developers’ aspirations.

It seemed for a moment that Microsoft Gaming might be on the verge of crumbling due to the heavy load it was carrying. This could be why Xbox is putting so much effort into 2025. The upcoming Xbox games set to release in the spring are incredibly exciting, serving as a refresher of why many of us chose this platform initially. Essentially, Xbox is pouring resources back into its heart – the Xbox Game Studios team is creating immersive RPGs, FPS, and action-adventure games, while the collection is further enriched by daring innovations from skilled third-party publishers.

Xbox’s 2025 in brief

As a gamer, I’m excitedly looking forward to a series of thrilling releases this spring! Obsidian’s Avowed drops in February, followed by Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight on April 8th and Doom: The Dark Ages from id Software on May 15th. These three games are not just visually stunning, they’re masterfully crafted, each one carrying the weight of boosting Xbox’s momentum in a competitive market.

Scattered throughout spring, other fantastic additions to the Game Pass library will keep us entertained. Rebellion’s Atomfall is slated for March 27th, and Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on April 24th are definitely standouts!

As we move past summer, it seems that the anticipated releases of Playground Games’ Fable and Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds 2 are tentatively slated for 2025, along with Gears of War: E-Day from The Coalition and a reboot of Perfect Dark by The Initiative. This lineup feels like the culmination that Xbox fans have been eagerly anticipating for years – the manifestation of Microsoft’s ambitious studio acquisition spree, which began in 2018. Frankly, this significant investment in diverse genres (both new and revivals of classic franchises) is stirring up nostalgia reminiscent of the original Xbox and Xbox 360 periods.

Currently, I am making an effort to adjust my own anticipation levels. The difference in quality between Redfall and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle clearly demonstrates that Xbox Game Studios has a history of inconsistency, unlike PlayStation Studios (with some exceptions like Concord). With an increasing number of Xbox’s first-party games set to be released on PlayStation too, the stakes are higher than ever due to the relatively lower sales of the Xbox Series X/S compared to the PS5. As a result, upcoming exclusives may receive unparalleled exposure.

The game “Doom: The Dark Ages” is set to launch simultaneously on all platforms, and it seems likely that many other Xbox games will be available on PlayStation 5 by the end of the year. If popular titles like “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” and “Forza Horizon 5,” which are highly anticipated for the Series X, perform well within the PlayStation ecosystem this year, it could boost Xbox’s aim to be present across all platforms. It’s possible that iconic franchises like “Halo” or “Gears” might even appear on the PS5 in the future.

2025 will reveal whether Xbox’s expansion onto other platforms will be deemed successful or not, as the tale unfolds. For now, attention should primarily be on Avowed, the significant launch from Xbox Game Studios this year, which will likely set the pace for the rest of 2021. If Obsidian has a hit with Avowed (and we’ve been quite impressed by what we’ve seen so far), it will create positive momentum. However, if Avowed underperforms, there will be increased expectations on South of Midnight and Doom: The Dark Ages to prove that Xbox can deliver when the moment calls for it.
