Hey there! In case you didn’t catch it, I had a bit of a disappointing weekend as my go-to gaming platform, the PlayStation Network (or PSN for short), experienced some downtime.
The network encountered an issue and remained offline from February 7th at 11:00pm GMT until February 8th at 8:30pm GMT, lasting approximately 20 hours. Despite the short duration, it marked the longest PSN outage since the significant 23-day service disruption caused by a cyber attack back in 2011.
As a dedicated gamer, I was hit hard by the recent PSN outage that took down every aspect of it. I couldn’t log in, engage with any online features, or enjoy my multiplayer games. To make matters worse, even some offline games were inaccessible because unless you’ve designated your PS5 or PS4 as the ‘primary’ console, software requires online verification to be played.
Essentially, there was a great deal of confusion, and Sony’s PlayStation received considerable backlash due to their poor communication regarding the issue. Beyond a few terse “we’re investigating this” messages on social platforms, they failed to provide any substantial public clarification.
Concerns about another attack mounted among numerous users as the downtime persisted, yet thankfully, normal service resumed approximately 20 hours later following the initial outage.
When it was all over, PlayStation said that the outage was caused by “an operational issue”.
