Acting for video games presents a unique challenge, as evidenced by the experiences shared by actors Tom McKay and Luke Dale from the upcoming game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
In an interview with the BBC, McKay, who portrays the main character Henry, describes working on the Kingdom Come series as “an incredibly unique and awe-inspiring acting experience.
Deliverance 2 is an expansive role-playing game that offers numerous decisions for you to make. It’s rumored to possess the largest game script ever, implying that actor McKay spent more than 500 hours in the recording studio.
He explains, “Instead of following a straight path in making decisions, you’d often take a detour, come halfway back, take another detour, possibly return to the starting point, and then continue again. This kind of decision-making process is something you wouldn’t encounter in TV or film productions.
Henry must be versatile in his delivery as he could portray a virtuous character, a hapless thief, or an unscrupulous killer, depending on the role he takes on.
Dale, in character as Hans Capon, says: “During a scene, several individuals approach you with various requests, such as ‘Could you do it this way?’ or ‘Just keep an eye on this.’ Tom and I often find ourselves thinking: ‘Let’s simplify this, can we break it down?’
After spending a considerable amount of time together, they all grew very fond of each other, much like slipping into a well-worn pair of shoes. Interestingly enough, while in the motion capture studio, they were dressed from head to toe in tight lycra suits.
Although actors might form friendships on set, they had to maintain an extraordinary level of secrecy regarding their work for nearly a decade. As McKay puts it, “It was much like working for a top-secret organization such as GCHQ, where you couldn’t discuss your work with anyone and even those in the studio sometimes couldn’t share details about what they were doing with their partners.
In contrast to movies and TV shows that frequently reveal behind-the-scenes content and provide hints about future seasons or episodes well ahead of time, video games are usually more secretive. When fans of the initial game spotted McKay in Warhorse Studios’ hometown Prague, he had to come up with a quick explanation to avoid speculation about a sequel. “I’d just say: ‘I simply adore Prague. I visit here quite frequently for numerous holidays,'” he explained.
In less than a day after release, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has sold more than a million copies, surpassing the previous peak concurrent players of its predecessor and landing within the top 50 most played games on Steam.
