Is The White Lotus Season 3 a Disappointment Without Tanya?

The saying goes that the second album is always challenging, but the truth is, living up to an exceptionally acclaimed piece of work is a formidable task at any stage in one’s career, regardless of experience.

Discuss Mike White, a filmmaker who has garnered acclaim for his delightful works such as School of Rock and HBO’s less recognized gem Enlightened. However, it was with The White Lotus season 2 that he truly excelled, achieving both critical and commercial recognition to new degrees.

In a post-pandemic setting, his satirical play, initially set in Italy, sparked global discussions due to its surprising plot turns. Remixes of its thrilling background music were also played at various festivals and clubs, eliciting an excited reaction.

How would one proceed after that, you might wonder? This is a query that White has had ample opportunity to mull over, but his response might fall short for those yearning to rekindle the exhilarating peaks experienced during winter 2022.

In the third season of The White Lotus, we’re transported to Thailand, as another elite group of individuals enjoy an extravagant vacation, skillfully orchestrated by the renowned hotel chain and their dedicated team.

Significantly, this installment marks the debut of the series without Jennifer Coolidge’s beloved character Tanya McQuoid, a regular scene-stealer in seasons 1 and 2, whose unexpected exit left viewers in awe. Her absence undeniably leaves an impact.

With a fresh wave of newcomers, there’s another boatful of old acquaintances like Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), Kate (Leslie Bibb) and Laurie (Carrie Coon). However, their anticipated girls’ getaway hasn’t turned out to be the harmonious reunion they had envisioned.

In addition to this, there’s the well-off Ratliff clan, consisting of Tim (played by Jason Isaacs) and Victoria (Parker Posey), alongside their trio of pampered offspring – Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), Lochlan (Sam Nivola), and Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook).

At last, we find ourselves with an unusual pair, Rick (Walton Goggins) and Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), who are separated by two decades and hold differing perspectives on life. Additionally, there’s Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), initially an employee but now a guest, making her way from the Maui branch as part of a transfer trip.

Regrettably, there seem to be less exceptional characters among this disorderly group compared to what’s required for The White Lotus season 3 to resonate nearly as powerfully as the first two did.

For the very first time, there seems to be a distinct sense of recurrence, as certain characters and storytelling techniques of White start to appear overly familiar, potentially losing their impact.

In this rephrased version, the screenwriter maintains his pattern by featuring a troubled family in a prominent position. However, the Ratliffs don’t quite match up to the Mossbachers from season 1 or the Di Grassos from season 2, as they come across as somewhat exaggerated depictions of Trump-supporting golf club members.

As a movie connoisseur, I must confess that The White Lotus has consistently captivated me with its intriguing ensemble of peculiar characters. However, this season seems to have pushed the boundaries of discomfort to such an extent that I find myself struggling to decipher the narrative threads. The plotlines appear to be more focused on delivering shock value than ever before – a feat not easily accomplished in today’s cinematic landscape.

The abundance of Ratliff characters results in them being almost constantly present on screen, making it challenging for other established scenes, such as White’s dinner sequences, to extract significant dramatic impact from the escalating problems they face.

Similarly, the romantic relationship between Chelsea and Rick in this series appears unconvincing since both characters seem to adhere closely to their standard screen roles. This lack of depth is especially disheartening given the scarcity of fresh elements in a season otherwise devoid of them.

In a dance of shifting authority, it’s White who often comes out on top among Jaclyn, Kate, and Laurie. Beneath their playful facades, these three harbor deep-rooted grudges that have festered over time, waiting to be unearthed. The trio delivers captivating performances in this intriguing scenario.

Absolutely, Belinda holds an edge since she’s well-known to the audience. Every phrase she speaks becomes a potential source of intrigue and connection to previous events, making them worth careful examination.

To be fair, there are instances when White appears to portray Belinda more as a prop for the storyline rather than a self-governing character. However, Rothwell’s charming acting skills soften the blow of these rough transitions.

Enthusiasts of the standout characters Valentina and Mia from season 2 will discover even more reasons to be captivated by the personnel here: host and dancer Mook, portrayed by K-pop sensation Lalisa Manobal, and her ardent admirer Gaitok, who is relatively unknown as Tayme Thapthimthong.

The charming interaction between them brings warmth to one’s heart, yet it’s characteristic of The White Lotus that an undercurrent of danger lingers, suggesting that their situation might suddenly take a disastrous turn.

Even though six episodes have passed, the show continues to follow its distinctive pattern by revealing a cadaver in the opening flash-forward segment, leaving the unlucky part open for anyone to potentially take on.

This new development is beneficial for theoretical researchers, offering numerous avenues to delve into. However, it also underscores the leisurely pace of this latest chapter, making you yearn for some excitement or chaos by the time we reach episode 5’s “moon festival.

In the second series, there was a somewhat sluggish beginning, yet it managed to power through the less engaging initial episodes with a more robust cast of characters. Eventually, it skillfully combined all its aspects into an almost perfect harmony.

After watching nearly three-quarters of White Lotus season 3, I find myself questioning Mike White’s storytelling abilities, wondering if he can repeat his previous success with this new installment.

The last two episodes could potentially be the most thrilling ones, yet, given the shaky base, there’s a limit to how intense they can become.

Some will question whether Coolidge’s Tanya was the secret sauce that kept The White Lotus running.

I contend that the evaluations of the series overlook or undervalue the outstanding characters and superb performances in the first two seasons, such as Murray Bartlett’s Armond, Aubrey Plaza’s Harper, Steve Zahn’s Mark, and Meghann Fahy’s Daphne.

However, by removing his most beloved and comically prominent hotel resident, White undeniably set a challenging standard in this piece, as no character manages to make an indelible impact similar to the previous one.

It’s worth mentioning that even though The White Lotus season 3 hasn’t changed significantly, it continues to be entertaining and worth watching TV.

Instead of labeling Mike White’s show as a disastrous or historic letdown, it might be more fitting to say that the show suffered due to its own triumph: the current season doesn’t quite meet White’s extraordinarily high standards, but when compared to most other shows, it likely exceeds average quality.
