Marvel’s Doctor Strange Director Has a New Horror Film Opening This Week (And You Can Watch It at Home)

This weekend, Scott Derrickson, director of Doctor Strange, unveils his latest horror film titled The Gorge. Interested viewers can catch it from the comfort of their homes as it premieres this Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Featuring a stellar cast including Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sigourney Weaver, The Gorge will be available exclusively on Apple TV+. Unlike some of Apple’s original movies that have had theatrical releases for awards consideration, The Gorge won’t be playing in cinemas, despite its storyline seemingly tailored for a big-screen experience.

In “The Gorge,” actors Teller and Taylor-Joy portray two operatives assigned to secure opposite ends of the ominous gorge, preventing anything from emerging below and causing chaos. Over the course of an entire year, they are prohibited from communicating with one another, but the movie trailer hints at their efforts to find common ground and develop a connection before events take a dangerous turn. Although “The Gorge” is predominantly a horror movie, the relationship between Teller and Taylor-Joy adds a romantic subplot to the storyline.

In 2022, Derrickson agreed to direct “The Gorge” following a vigorous script competition between multiple studios, which Skydance ultimately won. The project was initially marketed as an intense, genre-crossing romantic tale with high-action elements. Not long after the announcement, Teller secured a leading role in the movie.

Derrickson is primarily recognized for his work on 2016’s “Doctor Strange”, but he has a rich background in horror filmmaking. Notable projects in this genre include “Sinister” and “The Black Phone”, the latter of which received broad praise. Although not all of Derrickson’s directorial ventures have been universally lauded, he has proven adept at creating unsettling, suspenseful scenes, which bodes well for “The Gorge” in delivering chilling suspense. Given his experience with large-scale productions like tentpoles, it is expected that Derrickson’s expertise will be useful in portraying the mysterious creatures inhabiting the gorge that the characters played by Teller and Taylor-Joy encounter.

Outside of Marvel, Derrickson has consistently drawn large audiences with his films; “The Black Phone” earned $161.4 million globally and “Sinister” took in $82.5 million, both figures achieved on modest budgets. It’s surprising that Apple has decided to make “The Gorge” a streaming exclusive given its potential commercial success, particularly with the well-known actors attached to it. With “Captain America: Brave New World” hitting theaters this weekend, people might seek out “The Gorge” as something to watch at home afterwards. It appears that Apple is betting on the film’s success in streaming rather than in theaters.

In the upcoming year of 2025, The Gorge serves as a prelude to a bustling schedule I’ll be handling, and that includes the release of The Black Phone 2 set for October this year. As the director, I recently shared that the sequel is essentially a high school coming-of-age film, given its significant time leap to accommodate the maturing of our young actors within the franchise.
