Two new animated films titled “Heroes at Large” and “Silver Sentinel”, not connected to Marvel Comics, are being developed. These films are based on stories from the Stan Lee Universe, which are original ideas by Stan Lee himself, not adaptations of any existing content. The scripts for these movies are almost finalized, and they’re scheduled for release in 2027. This is just the beginning of several collaborative projects between Kartoon Studios and GFM Animation, leveraging their rights to use Stan Lee’s name and likeness.
It can be challenging to pinpoint the connections between these two movies and Lee’s work, as they appear to stem primarily from the company, POW! Entertainment, which Lee co-founded in 2001 following his departure from Marvel. In the years that ensued, most of Lee’s original works were produced through this venture, encompassing comics, TV shows, films, and other platforms. In 2020, Kartoon Studios procured the licensing rights to Lee’s original intellectual properties from POW!, as well as the rights to utilize his name and likeness. Both companies subsequently pooled these assets under a shared venture called Stan Lee Universe.
In my humble opinion as a film critic, it’s intriguing to note that I haven’t encountered any prior content from Lee regarding these characters. However, the assertion that these concepts originated with him is subtly suggested in a quote from Sean Feeney, head of production at GFM Animation. He shared with Deadline, “Having worked with them all previously and spending numerous months developing ways to authentically bring Stan’s original ideas to life and expand upon them, we are convinced they are the ideal picks for these crucial first two films. With their previous animation experience and success, they wholeheartedly align with our goals of crafting thrilling superhero adventures that cater to families. This is an exhilarating moment for us all!
Regarding the tales themselves, Silver Sentinel appears to be a mother-daughter saga that revolves around a businesswoman and busy mom who secretly combats crime at night. Interestingly, her powers start dwindling while her 14-year-old daughter’s abilities emerge. The typical adolescent friction intensifies, but they can hardly address it due to the urgency of teaming up to confront old adversaries.
Heroes Among Us” tells the tale of two ordinary men, bonded by friendship and shared work as electricians. They find joy in their family lives too. It seems they’ll become embroiled in a colossal, super-powered battle of cosmic dimensions, though the specifics remain unclear for now. Regardless, their unwavering friendship will likely be the decisive factor in overcoming this challenge.
As stated by Kartoon and GFM, both projects are nearing completion, with their films set for release in the year 2027. Their aim is to work together on additional productions outside of the non-Marvel Stan Lee Universe.
