In recent times, Capcom’s Monster Hunter series has received widespread praise and amassed a large, devoted player community, making it their most successful intellectual property so far. Notably, Monster Hunter originated on the PlayStation 2 all the way back in 2004, marking its roots deeply.
After that, numerous installments were added to the series, but the PlayStation Portable (PSP) edition stood out as crucial. The convenience of playing anytime, anywhere, and the option for cooperative multiplayer had a major impact, shaping what we recognize as Monster Hunter today.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite’s success can be attributed to the PSP
In an exclusive chat with Japan Forward, Ryozo Tsujimoto, the mastermind behind Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, shared insights into the making of MonHun and its journey, including key developments and subsequent adjustments.
Monster Hunter stands out as an exceptional game, paving the way for an entire genre – cooperative monster hunting. Initially, this series was primarily popular in Japan, but its focus on multiplayer cooperation has catapulted it to success worldwide.
In contrast to the current Monster Hunter games, the one released in 2004 was designed primarily for single-player experiences. Cooperative elements were introduced later on in the series’ development, as the necessary infrastructure for multiplayer gaming was significantly costlier and less accessible at that time.
The game scenario transformed significantly when Sony launched one of its top-performing consoles yet, the PlayStation Portable (PSP). This device offered PS2-quality graphics in a handheld format. Moreover, it included networking capabilities that enabled multiplayer experiences, with “Monster Hunter Unite” effectively utilizing this feature to the maximum.
In Japan, it’s referred to as “Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G,” but globally, we know it as “Unite.” This game allows up to four players to team up for monster hunting, with local co-op included. Back then, online multiplayer was a fresh concept, making it less likely for people to join a friend’s game at their house. However, the success of Unite was nearly inevitable due to this innovative feature.
The significant achievement of Unite can largely be traced back to its decision to go portable, as it successfully sold more than 4 million units, a remarkable figure by any standard.
From its inception, “Monster Hunter” has incorporated cooperative aspects to varying degrees across subsequent releases, which is a significant factor contributing to the game’s continued popularity beyond just its engaging gameplay.
The PSP can be credited for the success of a lot of games
Emphasizing the impact of Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) is crucial. Introduced by Sony as an attempt to penetrate the thriving portable gaming market, which has long been controlled by Nintendo, it was an unusual venture that proved incredibly successful.
Back in the day, I was one of the many who couldn’t get enough of the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Despite not dethroning Nintendo, it made a massive impact and left an enduring mark on gamers like me. The PSP had a treasure trove of top-notch games that are still enjoyable to play in 2025!
Nevertheless, even after numerous updates, the PSP eventually gave way to the PlayStation Vita (PSVita). This transition sparked a diverse response among fans, mainly due to its limited selection of first-party games and exorbitant cost.
The PSP was replaced by the PlayStation Vita (PSVita), but it didn’t win over fans because it had few good games and was quite expensive.
In essence, Sony’s handheld gaming sector has been gradually fading away and they haven’t introduced a genuine successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) so far, though there’s hope for one in the future.
