DC’s Black Lightning Creator Jenny Blake Isabella Comes Out as Transgender

The creator behind DC Comics’ Black Lightning publicly revealed her transgender identity over the weekend. In a social media post, Jenny Blake Isabella (formerly known as Tony Isabella) shared that she is transgender. She also asked to be credited for her past work as “Tony Isabella,” while she will write under both names this year and present as Tony Isabella at most events in 2023.

What I’m sharing with you now is genuine, and I look forward to discussing more with all of you soon. Until then, I kindly ask for your understanding and respect for my privacy, as well as that of my spouse and our kids. I appreciate it.” – Isabella

On my blog this week, I took some time to engage with fans by addressing their queries, primarily about the origin of my unique moniker.

She noted that her favorite name is ‘Jenny Blake Isabella.’ She’s fond of the name Jenny and the surname Blake is derived from Marvel’s character Doctor Strange, which she has always admired as a comics enthusiast.

She went on to say, “I don’t view ‘Tony Isabella’ as a deceased name. I’ve produced numerous great stories and other works under this name and have done a lot of good for people. I intend to carry on using that name along with my preferred one. DC Comics inquired if they should alter the credits on their website and any future reprints of my work to my new name, or maintain the backlist credits as they are and use Jenny for any fresh work I create. What a thoughtful gesture of them.

In a notable achievement, Isabella is primarily recognized for teaming up with artist Trevor Von Eeden to introduce the comic book character Black Lightning for DC Comics back in 1977. This marked the debut of the first Black superhero to spearhead his own series at DC. Subsequently, this character gained its own live-action TV series on The CW, with Cress Williams portraying the lead role in 2018. Spanning over four seasons, this show was well-received.

Furthermore, Isabella also penned Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands, a limited series, in 2017. Beyond her work with DC, she collaborated with artist Arvell Jones to create Misty Knight and teamed up with George Tuska to co-create Black Goliath.

In terms of recent projects, Isabella shared on her blog that she has developed a new trans superhero character that she’s extremely enthusiastic about. She previously announced the creation of this character on her social media earlier this month, expressing her belief that this character could be as revolutionary as Black Lightning was in the 1970s.

Isabella wrote that she’s developing a fresh trans superhero character whom she grows fonder of each day. She believes this hero could serve as a modern-day equivalent of Peter Parker, appealing to both LGBTQ+ and straight youth. The preliminary proposal is prepared for submission to publishers or partners willing to negotiate a reasonable and advantageous deal. However, Isabella emphasizes that she’s unwilling to relinquish creative control over this new character or transfer all rights to her.
