Over the past year, the Green Lantern Corps has traveled a lengthy path, facing numerous difficulties and upheavals. Yet, the squad now assembled may well be one of the most remarkable teams ever. While this assertion might seem overly enthusiastic, those who delve into Green Lantern Corps #1 will discover that the foundations for a new golden age have been carefully laid.
Drastic alterations to core Corps principles and rearrangements within the team are significant elements, but it’s the ongoing development of key characters that really propels this story forward, marking the start of what could be an exceptional series.
In this comic series, the Green Lantern Corps boasts a diverse cast, yet several key characters take center stage. Remarkably, Morgan Hampton and Jeremy Adams skillfully juggle these multiple characters in each issue, ensuring that every appearance feels significant to the narrative. It’s no small task to manage such a large team, but they do an exceptional job of making each character’s entrance count.
In my humble opinion, John Stewart has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two years, manifesting in various aspects of his life and powers. Hampton and Adams skillfully delve into these changes without overwhelming novice readers. They expertly introduce Ellie’s creation, and more importantly, depict how she interacts with others and assumes her new role within the Corps – all accomplished effectively within a few panels.
What truly impresses me is the evolution of John’s character and leadership style, making this incarnation of him the most multi-dimensional yet. All in all, this series offers a well-rounded portrayal of John Stewart that I wholeheartedly recommend to both seasoned fans and newcomers alike.
Stewart isn’t the sole Lantern who shines in this issue; characters like Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and Jo Mullein also have their time to shine, enriching the story even more. Moreover, a significant new member joins the team, whose entry creates quite a stir and brings a unique flavor while still connecting to the Corps’ rich past. This unexpected move is intriguing and will undoubtedly influence events in the coming chapters.
The success of all this doesn’t happen without the exceptional work by artists Fernando Pasarin, inker Oclair Albert, colorist Arif Prianto, and letterer Dave Sharpe. They transform one-on-one conversations into authentic glimpses of space cop life. For instance, a scene at OA’s central station early in the issue showcases a conversation between Jo and John, but there’s an additional engaging storyline unfolding behind them that adds depth and liveliness not only to OA but also to the Corps as a whole.
As events become grand and spectacular, the team rises to the occasion with equal flair, making way for creatively dynamic action scenes that showcase Green Lantern’s unique appeal. On the lighter side, watching the Corps’ amusing reactions during unexpected meetings adds a delightful touch, much like an unforeseen twist in the office that sparks intriguing conversations, doesn’t it?
Issue #1 of Green Lantern Corps introduces a multitude of recent elements and alterations, seamlessly integrating them into a revitalized state that brims with novelty and promise, while still paying tribute to the Corps’ rich history in surprising manners. This is the kind of clean slate many have been eagerly anticipating for the Corps for quite some time. Here’s to an exciting new chapter!
