In the 1960s, Marvel significantly transformed the concept of superheroes. Creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby offered a unique blend of thrilling action and human vulnerability that was highly desired by readers. Unlike traditional superheroes, Marvel characters were strikingly relatable due to their flaws and imperfections, even when they didn’t always triumph. Their struggles, whether in their costumed or private lives, introduced a level of human frailty previously absent from the genre. Over time, Marvel continued to develop these more grounded superheroes, leading many characters – both heroes and villains – to be seen as underdogs. Yet, some of the most endearing Marvel figures are those who face the most challenges.
These five characters gained immense popularity due to their underdog stature, making it effortless for readers to empathize and root for them.
Spider-Man
The Marvel Comics Era started in 1961 with the release of Fantastic Four #1, although some argue it truly began with Amazing Fantasy #15. This comic introduced Spider-Man, who became symbolic of Marvel’s unique take on superheroes. Peter Parker, our tragic hero, was often bullied at school and struggled financially. When he acquired his powers, he lost a significant influence in his life – his uncle, who had been a guiding force. He had bad luck with romance and worked tirelessly to provide for himself and his aunt. Balancing his personal life with his Spider-Man duties only added to his troubles, as each triumph was followed by some form of setback.
As a devoted fan, I’ve always found myself closely identifying with Spider-Man. Despite his struggles, he was the underdog we all rooted for. His losses were our losses, his hardships mirrored ours. Over time, Marvel has arguably pushed his ‘loser’ persona too far – keeping him single and down on his luck for longer than most fans would prefer. Yet, this very frustration highlights the depth of our affection for him. We yearn to see Spidey triumph, to witness him taste victory occasionally. And it’s clear we’ll follow him through thick and thin, hoping to catch glimpses of joy in his life – the happiness that every hero deserves.
Hawkeye
Initially, Hawkeye made his debut in the Marvel Universe as a villain, influenced by Black Widow to confront Iron Man. From the get-go, Hawkeye displayed his less admirable traits – acting foolishly to attract female attention – and since then, he has been recognized as one of Marvel’s most notorious underdog characters across comics, television series, and films.
Despite being one of the bravest heroes in the Marvel Universe, equipped with an ancient weapon, battling alongside deities, super-soldiers, and geniuses against cosmic threats, Hawkeye’s actions often question his sanity, a fact recognized by all those he fights alongside.
In various phases of his career, Hawkeye has achieved notable feats, such as leading the West Coast Avengers and the Thunderbolts, but his superhero journey is predominantly characterized by his role as the perennial underdog among the Avengers. This trait was also evident in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Hawkeye was essentially a skilled soldier wielding an outdated weapon, fully aware of his position within the team. In films like Avengers: Age of Ultron, this awareness was underscored by his dialogue, and his tragic loss in Avengers: Endgame further solidified this image. The recent Hawkeye TV series portrayed him as a battle-worn hero, reliant on the aid of the new generation to emerge victorious. Despite being typecast as the loser superhero in any universe, Hawkeye remains undeterred. His humor and unyielding spirit are cherished by fans, but it’s his refusal to give up, even in the face of adversity, that truly endears him to us as one of the most lovable loser superheroes.
Iceman
In the early days of the X-Men team, Iceman was known as the youngest member, often jokingly referred to as a snowman due to his ice powers. Throughout the years, he maintained a humorous, underdog persona, which became his defining characteristic. As his peers evolved and advanced, Iceman remained somewhat stagnant. However, his life took an unexpected turn when Loki interfered with his mutant abilities, causing him to wear a control belt. Later, Emma Frost utilized his powers more effectively than he ever could after a Sentinel attack, leaving him in a supporting role. Despite the growth and progress of his fellow X-Men, Iceman remained relatively unchanged over time.
Despite his struggles and setbacks, Iceman has been adored by fans for his endearing personality, humor, and unwavering presence. Over time, he’s experienced some positive changes – his powers were discovered to be Omega level, and revealing his homosexuality brought him newfound happiness – yet he remains the underdog among the X-Men. His life is chaotic, he often falls short in battles compared to his potential, and leading a team still eludes him. However, readers continue to cheer for Iceman because they anticipate his unique ice abilities and hilarious jokes.
Deadpool
Despite being among the most beloved superheroes globally at present, a significant factor behind this popularity is that Deadpool embodies a character who, beneath all his success, experiences an underlying tragedy in his life. His dangerous persona and immortality don’t diminish the core sadness that defines Deadpool – a series of unfortunate events persistently mark his existence. Wade Wilson’s healing factor might appear as his most potent weapon on the battlefield, but it is his unyielding determination that truly drives him forward; for any ordinary individual, giving up would have been a long-ago option if they were in Deadpool’s shoes.
Fans adore Deadpool not just because he’s both humorous and violent, but these traits contribute significantly to his appeal. However, it’s Deadpool’s unyielding determination and optimism that truly make him a beloved character among fans. Notice how each of the Deadpool movies revolve around him losing something valuable, hoping to retrieve them, and then going to extremes that seem impossible – this is why fans are drawn to him. Over several decades, Deadpool’s fan base has grown, propelling him to become one of the most popular superheroes today.
The Thing
Ben Grimm transitioned into a superhero, thereby forfeiting his human identity. Once a man brimming with possibilities, he was metamorphosed into a grotesque figure, a fate that not even his brilliant friend Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic) could alleviate. Ben Grimm found himself confined within the stony form bestowed upon him by cosmic rays, grappling with this new existence.
The Thing’s tales stood out among his Fantastic Four companions due to their poignant central tragedies that resonated deeply with fans. The life-altering transformation Ben Grimm underwent, turning him into the Thing, was a source of heartache that viewers followed as he adapted and found solace in the Fantastic Four family. His relationship with Alicia Masters blossomed, culminating in marriage, and he became an integral part of the team, garnering respect and affection from fellow superheroes. The Thing’s narrative is a testament to his resilience in facing adversity and finding optimism amidst pain. Though he experiences losses and is shaped by them, he refuses to let them define him. It is this unyielding spirit, combined with his ever-present wit and courage, that makes fans adore the Thing – a character always ready with a joke and poised to tackle any obstacle in his path.
These characters all appear in Marvel Comics.
