The University of Nevada community is mourning the loss of a student athlete.
On February 11th, it was confirmed by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas that Ben Christman, a team member of their football program, was tragically discovered deceased in an apartment off-campus. At the time of his passing, he was only 21 years old.
College authorities have informed both Christman’s relatives and associates, as stated on their site on February 12th. However, they did not provide any additional information at the moment.
As a devoted fan following the news closely, I can confirm that the coroner’s office in Clark County has shared no details about the cause of the athlete’s demise, as reported by TopMob News.
Following the demise of Christman, individuals from the UNLV community expressed their sorrow and sadness.
With deep sadness, Dan Mullen, head coach of our football team, expressed on February 12th that our hearts are shattered by the news of Ben’s death. From the moment Ben joined us a month ago, he significantly improved our program. It was evident why he was a natural pick for our Leadership Committee, as his fellow players quickly respected, admired, and befriended him. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone who knew him. Ben left an indelible mark on the world and will be deeply missed.
University president Keith E. Whitfield expressed deep sadness in a statement, saying, “I am deeply saddened…” He continued, “It’s hard to find words when we lose someone from our university community at such a young age. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and cherished Ben.” On behalf of UNLV, he extended his condolences to Ben’s family, friends, loved ones, and teammates during this challenging period.
Following his high school graduation in Ohio, Christman embarked on his college football journey at Ohio State University in the year 2021. He spent two seasons there before moving to the University of Kentucky for the 2023 season. Unfortunately, he missed out on playing during his first season at Kentucky due to an ACL injury. However, he managed to play in all 12 games during the 2024 season. After that, he transferred to UNLV, as reported by the Associated Press.
He expressed in a 2023 Instagram post that he is more focused on achieving greatness (the glory) rather than merely being recognized (the honor mention), referencing Drake’s song “Lose You” about his football journey. In other words, he wants to strive for success rather than falling short (4th and inches) or coming up just short of the goal line (go the distance).
